Department Information



As a part of the College of Arts and Sciences (the College), the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is IU's home base for this interdisciplinary field with roots in psychology, physiology, physics, music, linguistics, and education.


SLHS faculty conduct clinical, translational, and basic research within 3 broad areas: Speech, Language, and Hearing. Their research reflects training and expertise in a very wide range of areas, including psychology, linguistics, physiology, and engineering.


More specifically, the individual hired for this role will work in the lab of Ishanti Gangopadhyay, PhD.


Dr. Gangopadhyay is an Assistant Professor in the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Department at Indiana University. She directs the Language Experience and Multilingualism Research (LEMuR) lab, and her research broadly examines language development in children with and without communication difficulties who come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Job Summary



The Language Experience and Multilingualism Research (LEMuR) Lab, directed by Dr. Ishanti Gangopadhyay, at Indiana University-Bloomington is seeking a lab manager/laboratory research assistant. It is a great opportunity for a recent college graduate who would like to gain experience in an intensive research setting before applying to graduate school and offers a supportive and friendly work environment.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Responsible for lab management.

  • Manages regulatory compliance such as human subjects, FERPA regulations, etc.

General Responsibilities


  • Tests and sets up lab equipment.

  • Collects data and prepares reports based upon established protocols.

  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings.

  • Orders, receives, and inventories laboratory supplies.

  • Cleans glassware and maintains laboratory work areas.

  • Troubleshoots breakdowns, performs preventive maintenance, and calls for repairs as needed.

  • Maintains logs and equipment record books.




Qualifications



Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.


EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences, Psychology, Education, Cognitive Science, or a related field) and 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting; OR

  • Associate's degree and 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting.


Preferred



  • Experience working with children ages 3 - 12 years of age.

  • Research experience.

  • Strong technical skills (e.g., Gorilla Experimental Builder; basic stats; Rstudio; Matlab, Python, Eprime; PsychoPy).

  • Demonstrates independent and motivated working mindset to complete tasks.

  • Possesses a high level of self-discipline and time management skills.




Working Conditions / Demands



The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.



Additional Information



This position is grant funded with expected annual renewals. Renewals are contingent on the availability of grant funds.


Target date to start in-person is June, 2024.

$40,000 annualized wage, paid bi-weekly.
