Job Description Summary
This position is for the lab manager of the Infant Language Center, i.e. Prof. Daniel Swingley's lab at Penn. They will coordinate all aspects of several language development studies at the lab, and manage a set of several undergraduate research assistants in a wide range of tasks, from IRB submission and maintenance to programming experiments, data collection and processing, and some data analysis. The lab manager serves as the primary contact person to parents of our child research participants.
This is a One Year Term appointment, with extension depending on funding.
Job Description
DUTIES:
The Penn Infant Language Center (D. Swingley, PI) studies language acquisition in infants and children. We observe infants in carefully controlled lab and home settings, measure aspects of parent-child interaction at home and in lab playrooms, and create, annotate, and analyze corpora of infant-directed language. The lab is seeking a research specialist / lab manager to oversee all aspects of language development studies. The lab manager will train and supervise student research assistants, and will oversee general lab administration, including IRB protocols and maintenance of data. Other duties include programming experiments, data collection and processing, and preliminary data analysis. The lab manager will serve as the primary liaison to parents of participants, and to the children's hospital that is collaborating with us to engage parents in our work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's Degree in psychology or an allied field such as cognitive science, neuroscience, or linguistics.
The ideal applicant would demonstrate high attention to detail, have excellent interpersonal skills, and exhibit strong technical and analytical skills. Familiarity with the R and/or Python programming languages is preferred, and it is helpful to be the kind of person who can make computers do things. Experience with eyetracking systems is also preferred but really not required. Coursework background in developmental psychology, phonetics, or computational linguistics preferred but not required. This is both a public-facing position (requiring the social skills to build and maintain good relationships with our busy parent volunteers), and a lab science leadership position (requiring abilities to manage research assistants as they test children and code behaviors, and help research assistants solve problems).
