Full-time, salaried with benefits; primarily day shift Monday through Friday with flexibility to work as needed by the department.

JOB SUMMARY

The Laboratory Director has responsibilities to the hospital, to nursing services, to the patient and to the medical staff. The Director will interpret and support the hospital mission, Board of Directors and Medical Staff objectives and policies. The director will manage the clinical laboratory staff assuring high-quality diagnostic results expeditiously delivered to practitioners. The Director will also provide efficient and effective leadership to staff he/she manages.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. Is responsible for managing, directing and supervising the laboratory.
  2. Assesses the quality of care rendered.
  3. Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern laboratory services and other services under position control.
  4. Is responsible for staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention and staff development.
  5. Is responsible for collaborating with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
  6. Is responsible for planning, developing and implementing a budgeted process for staffing and services rendered.
  7. Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the hospital.
  8. Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
  9. Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of services provided.
  10. Maintains a quality control program that assures accuracy in outcomes and meets state, federal and JOINT COMMISSION requirements.
  11. Is responsible for strategic planning and goal setting consistent with hospital-wide goals and works toward their achievement while ensuring that short-term goals are met.
  12. Is aware of and acknowledges personal strengths, needs and limitations and the part they play in effective leadership.
  13. Maintains effectiveness in varying work environments where circumstances and priorities are changing.
  14. Performs duties related to lab on a regular basis.
  15. Reviews and judges all work performed in the clinical laboratory. Questions and rectifies incongruous results, appraises quality control procedures and surveys to ascertain efficiency and accuracy of staff performance, instrumentation and current methodologies.
  16. Meets with all technical sales and service representatives in order to keep abreast of improved testing methodologies and to maintain proper instrument conditions, to perform conditions and to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  17. Acts as a microbiology consultant at Infection Control meetings.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum B.S. in Medical Technology required.
  2. ASCP certified as a Medical Technologist required.
  3. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS certified.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Possess knowledge and skills in the following areas: principles of organization, theories of management, human resource management, strategies of laboratory and radiology management, financial management, foundation of health laws and statistics and research methodology.
  3. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
  4. Must acquire the knowledge and maintain established competency levels to perform essential professional laboratory practice.
  5. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress, with minimal supervision, and to exercise initiative and judgment in analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.
  6. Needs to possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  7. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  8. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. The Laboratory Director is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The Director is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  3. The Laboratory Director must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess results in procedures performed.
