Job Summary


This is a full-time, fiscal year permanent position reporting to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services within the Division of Student Affairs.


The Director of Advising and Career Services is responsible for the implementation of the Southwest integrated academic and career advising model and the scaling, oversight and operation of the resultant Southwest Career and Academic Community program. Supervising three Career and Academic Community Managers, an Assistant Director for Career Services, and Career Specialists, the Director is accountable for the efficacy of the college's career and academic planning programs as well as retention and persistence benchmarks established by college administration.


The Director will provide strategic direction for the development and implementation of a holistic case management model of advising and career services that begins with career exploration and major selection for prospective and incoming students, provides a single-point-of-contact to continuing students, and connects students to career experiences while at the college and beyond. The Director actively builds and maintains networks with campus partners, employers, and other community partners to develop opportunities for the college's students.


This position requires a minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Additional hours may be required. Travel will be required between campus locations and for professional development.



Job Duties



  • Develop and implement a pre-college career assessment and counseling process to connect prospective and incoming students with an appropriate educational pathway upon entry into the college.

  • Work with department staff and campus partners to develop resources for student success, and promote successful degree attainment as reflected in reaching persistence, retention, and graduation goals.

  • Provide direction and leadership for the career development and career services programs.

  • Oversee the planning and delivery of career readiness programs and services.

  • Partner with faculty to build employer partnerships and share employment opportunities with students.

  • Participate in academic advisory board functions.

  • Ensure the development of performance goals, initiatives, and performance indicators.

  • Participate in campus-wide professional initiatives with other college administrators & faculty in order to advocate for the needs of students.

  • Promote the credibility of the operation, while facilitating working relationships and more effective service models.

  • Develop positive and productive relationships with faculty and Student Affairs staff.

Minimum Qualifications


Master's degree in education, counseling, human services or related field
Three or more years of supervisory and/or leadership skills in advising or related field
Experience working with students in a post-secondary institution preferred



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working in a team-oriented environment


  • Experience advising special populations


  • Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects


  • Ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (MS Word, Excel, Student Information Systems (BANNER), Degree Works, Internet/On-line Resources and Support)


  • Analyze student academic curriculum progress to ensure desired end-results.


  • Provide student referrals for internal and external resources i.e. at-risk students, etc.


  • Assess student eligibility for scholarship, special programs, and honor courses


  • Ability to demonstrate concern for satisfying one's external and/or internal customers; quickly and effectively solve problems; and present a cheerful, positive manner with students and the college community




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Experience working with an ever-growing student population.


  • Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
