About the College/Unit/Department:

The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet.

Position Summary:

The University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and the Department of Marine Sciences in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences invite applications or nominations for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position resident at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, GA.


The Skidaway Institute is situated near the broad shallow shelf of the South Atlantic Bight (SAB), which has a strong western boundary current at its seaward boundary and an extensive marsh and estuarine system at its landward boundary. We expect the successful candidate to be self-motivated, and interested in pursuing innovative research and education in a highly supportive academic environment.


Candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including advanced courses in their area of specialization, and support research and mentoring of students and postdocs.


The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography leverages the resources of a coastal research and training institute, including close proximity to a variety of marine environments and access to the UNOLS-affiliated R/V Savannah, as well as the resources and academic opportunities available at the University of Georgia, the state's flagship university. Successful candidates will enhance existing programs in the Department of Marine Sciences in Athens (

) and at Skidaway (

). Interactions with other departments and with institutions throughout the University System of Georgia are supported and encouraged.


Additional Requirements:



  • A successful candidate to an Assistant Professor level appointment must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Oceanography (or a related area) and at least 1 year of postdoctoral experience.

  • Exceptional applicants seeking appointment at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate a successful history of extramural funding required to support a sustainable research program and an established national reputation with a clear path toward an international reputation in their field based on a body of published work (see

    ).

  • To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor and have tenure with their current institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire (see

    ).


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:



  • We are seeking a collegial individual whose research focuses on numerically and/or analytically modeling coastal systems, encompassing the seaward open ocean boundary, regional shelf, to nearshore continuum.

  • We seek an individual examining cross-shelf exchange in coastal settings worldwide, with interests and skills needed to surmount the modeling hurdles that systems like the SAB present.

  • Candidates who examine interdisciplinary research questions by coupling models with observations are preferred.

  • Candidates with records that provide evidence of scholarship, synergistic activities, and the potential to obtain extramural funding are preferred.
