We are currently looking for a Technical Writer to join our Enabling Technologies Research and Development organization in Lafayette, Colorado. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated technical communicator to work collaboratively to solve problems in complex environments.

This position is in the Neuroscience Portfolio group working on software applications and hardware serving brain, spine, and ENT surgical procedures.

A Day in the Life

In this role, you will develop and maintain a variety of customer-facing Instructions for Use (IFU) documents, including Pocket Guides, System Manuals, Quick Reference Guides, Package Inserts, Technical Bulletins, software help files, and other technical materials describing our portfolio of neurosurgical technology products.

You will complete projects independently, manage priorities, apply company procedures to resolve issues, identify and pursue improvement projects, and manage the user documentation pool for a specific business segment or segments.

You will present complex concepts clearly and concisely, manage multiple projects concurrently, adjust priorities frequently, and overcome obstacles to meet deadlines. In addition, you will be responsible for preparing, coordinating, tracking, and finalizing document translation projects as required. You may provide guidance to lower-level personnel.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:


  • Identifying document requirements and interviewing subject matter experts to obtain the necessary information to develop detailed, accurate, and professional documentation.
  • Completing, routing, and releasing IFU's in a document control system and collaborating with marketing and operations to ensure that the IFU's are included with the products they describe.
  • Learning and understanding the design and behavior of the company's products.
  • Designing, developing, and maintaining IFU using FrameMaker ® and other software applications.
  • Controlling IFU versioning and maintain the IFU archives.
  • Providing IFU-related support to the Marketing, Product Development, and Regulatory groups.
  • Identifying IFU translation requirements and preparing and managing translation projects.
  • Performing the administrative documentation tasks required to establish and track IFU in a Product Lifecycle Management system.
  • Evaluating business processes, identifying improvement opportunities, and implementing improvements.
  • Proofreading and editing the work of other writers.
  • Working within a matrixed environment, where direction, prioritization, and other daily activities may be established via an indirect reporting relationship.
  • Ensuring your work follows environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.
  • Travel requirement: Less than 25% (Domestically and/or internationally)

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of no experience

  • BS / BA in Science, Engineering, English, or Journalism
  • Master's degree in Science, Engineering, English, or Journalism
  • Technical writing experience in the medical device, scientific, or other regulated industry
  • Advanced skills in FrameMaker ® or other professional document authoring software
  • Structured authoring experience
  • Content management system (CMS) experience
  • HTML, XML, CSS skills and experience
  • Experience writing online documentation or help systems
  • Experience writing for a global audience
  • Experience with professional translation services
  • Adobe Acrobat ® skills and experience
  • PhotoShop ® and Adobe Illustrator ® software
