Purpose



The primary purpose of the CWS Durham Paralegal is to provide administrative support to the CWS Durham Immigration Legal Services Program, and assist DOJ Accredited Representatives in providing eligibility screenings, application completion, and follow-up services, to eligible refugees, asylees, lawful permanent residents (LPRs), and immigrants eligible for the Central American Minor (CAM) Refugee Program.



Responsibilities





  • Meet with clients to gather initial information and assist DOJ Accredited Representatives and Attorneys in preparing applications for various immigration benefits for refugees, asylees, lawful permanent residents (LPRs), immigrants eligible for the Central American Minor (CAM) Refugee Program, and Afghan Asylum and Adjustment applicants;

  • Provide administrative support to the CWS Durham Immigration Legal Services team, including answering client phone calls and scheduling appointments, entering data in case management software; and photocopying documents;

  • Assisting DOJ Accredited Representatives and Attorneys in immigration case management and follow up with clients and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS);

  • Maintain accuracy in client case files and case note documentation; update client case status regularly in case management database;

  • Assist in compiling client application packets for various immigration benefits in a thorough and accurate fashion to ensure that all required evidence and documentation is attached;

  • Assist DOJ Accredited Representatives and Attorneys in maintaining statistics and records to track Immigration Legal Services program results;

  • Conduct legal research;

  • Perform other duties as requested.




Qualifications





  • Strong computer literacy, with knowledge of word processing and database applications.

  • Ability to use standard office equipment in performing varied activities.

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.

  • Bi-lingual is preferred

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment required.

Education & Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent.


Experience: Previous work or volunteer experience with asylum seekers, refugees, asylees, and other immigrants. At least one year (or two academic semesters) of related experience as a paralegal or intern is preferred.
