Educational and Experience Requirement:

High school graduate or GED equivalent. Minimum of ten years of experience in a supervisory capacity managing and directing landscape services operations or experience in a related field. Certified Arborist, Licensed Irrigator, or Certified Landscape Professional qualifications are desirable. Must possess a valid TDA Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License or obtain one within six (6) months of hire. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.


Nature & Purpose of Position:

Direct and supervise the operational and personnel activities of the university grounds services program. Ensure the development and maintenance of a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.


Primary Responsibilities:

Oversees the supervision and leadership for Landscape Services. Plans, organizes, and directs the operations of approximately 25 personnel involved in landscape maintenance including turf maintenance, horticulture, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, irrigation, fertilization, urban forestry, sports fields, litter pickup, special events, and other duties as needed. Responsible for requesting and inspecting the inventory of supplies and equipment used in the landscape maintenance program. Frequently in contact with other University departments, administrators, faculty, staff, students, visitors, and off-campus agencies as needed. Directs, delegates, and oversees the work of assigned employees. Schedules work assignments. Handles employee relations such as onboarding, separations, and work performance. Provides training both formal and informal, on the job training, and job knowledge from past experience. Assists in budgets, reports, department policies, quality control surveys, and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Other Specifications:

Must possess a valid TDA Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License, or be capable of obtaining one within six months. Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the university's insurance carrier is required. Must have knowledge of landscape tools and equipment. Requires basic computer skills including the use of electronic office mail, office productivity software, and computerized maintenance management software.


Good working knowledge of the various types of equipment used in the assigned areas in a particular craft, skill, or unit. Proficiency in all phases of work performed. Working conditions are considered fair but involve more than average (25-50%) exposure to one or more disagreeable elements or hazardous equipment, materials, and chemicals. Contacts will vary according to particular department and area assigned to include other University departments, faculty, staff, students, and off campus agencies. Work requires the exercise of moderate judgment in the application and interpretation of policy, procedures, or practices to work problems of a well-defined nature. Decisions and commitments usually relate to many minor problems and occasionally to a major one. Moderately serious consequences or loss may result from errors in judgment.
