Job Description:

TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking a full-time Technician III to join our team in Ft Myers, Florida.

Summary: Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on Intelligent Transportation System devices and various Fiber Optic facilities for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This job may include aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance actions including troubleshooting and repair of electronic equipment, systems, wiring and fiber optic cables; installation of equipment; upgrades, modifications, and documentation. Must be able to fusion splice fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings. Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams and maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s). Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes, support project timelines, and inspect, and provide accurate records for projects.

This is a hands-on role, and the qualified candidate must be capable of determining the most effective means to performing appropriate maintenance to maximize efficiency. This position requires field work which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and out-of-normal work hours. Travel will be required depending on the business needs. Must successfully complete required background / drug screening that TransCore initiates as part of the hiring process; additionally, successfully complete a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and State Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) background screen when required by project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Installation, corrective, and preventive maintenance of equipment to include network communications, radio equipment, Close Circuit Television (CCTV) and Microwave Vehicle Detection System (MVDS) units, and Dynamic Message Signs (DMS).
  • Complete reports and logs in accordance with established policies, and procedures.
  • Responds to corrective maintenance requests or alarms within an acceptable time frame.
  • Diagnose and repair hardware, software, and system issues
  • Report the technical status of the system with accuracy and completeness.
  • Restore equipment to operational status as quickly as possible.
  • Isolation of faults in units or components.
  • Field test units or components; test devices to ensure they work correctly.
  • Fusion splice fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings
  • Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams, maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities surrounding the assigned work site(s)
  • Take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes
  • Support project timelines, inspect, design, and provide accurate records for projects
  • Occasional Weekend Work will be required.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Use of digital multi-meter for servicing equipment.
  • Use of Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) for testing fiber optic cables.
  • Use of hand and power tools to install equipment into various buildings, cabinets, and racks.
  • Able to splice loose tube fiber optic cables.
  • Able to construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  • Able to prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagram.
  • Microsoft Office.
  • Basic computer and networking experience.
  • Windows TCP/IP setup.
  • Remote computer system management.
  • Read and interpret schematic diagrams & construction plans.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • FDOT approved TTC certification.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to work at heights from 40 to 80 feet or more from an aerial lift, bucket trucks or crane basket. Must be able to work in both outdoor and indoor settings to include inclimate weather when required.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • CDL Class B license.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal I Certification.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal II Certification.
  • Ability to read roadway plans, create/close work orders.

Education:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One-year Certificate from college or technical school or equivalent military training or Minimum of 2 years of related experience.
