Duties: The Clinical Research Nurse Practitioner in the HIV Prevention Research Division is responsible for: recruitment of patients for research protocols, screening for eligibility, management of patient care, collection of medical and medication history, physical examinations, completion of patient visits according to protocol specifications, prescribing and administration of investigational products by various routes including IV infusions, procurement of specific laboratory specimens, conducting complex evaluations, and completion of source documentation and clinical research forms. The nurse practitioner also takes an active role in participant adherence to treatment and study visits. Additionally, s/he is required to review all clinical and laboratory data, make assessments on severity of symptoms and diagnoses, and develop management plans of toxicities and adverse events, consulting with medical staff when needed. This position will require the nurse practitioner to have a flexible schedule. Research participants are seen in the clinical setting during early morning and early evening hours as well as daytime visits, and reactogenicity evaluations are done via phone call on all days of the week and year. The nurse practitioner is also responsible for supervision of research support staff. Research assistants are non-licensed personnel assigned to work with the nurse practitioner to perform specific tasks that do not require licensure. The nurse practitioner also acts as a mentor to nurses who have joined the unit with less research experience. This may include RN and LPN staff nurses. Nurse practitioners are responsible for management of very complex evaluations. The nurse practitioner will be expected to conduct studies involving a wide variety of investigational products and various sponsors. This area of research requires dedicated attention and care to ensure patient safety and well being. The nurse practitioner is responsible for arranging and setting up appointments for procedures in other departments when necessary. The nurse practitioner is also responsible for the collection of a variety of mucosal specimens, biopsies, and evaluation and managing adverse events, ordering and interpreting appropriate laboratory assessments. Perform history and physicals, pelvic exams as needed per protocol.
Qualifications: Masters in Nursing and at least 5 years of experience in a clinical setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. At least two years of this experience in research is preferred. Must have Board Certification from a nationally recognized certification agency. Must have recent experience in administering intravenous medications and operating IV infusion pumps.
This position is conditional upon successful completion of credentialing through the University of Pennsylvania Medical board.
