Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeing a full-time Pharmacy Manager of Drug Information to join the team. The Pharmacy Manager, Drug Information will oversee UIHC drug information services. This position will serve as a member of the Pharmacy leadership team and will be responsible for management and oversight of multiple service areas and staff members. This position includes direct supervision of clinical specialists and is responsible for the engagement and development of staff, evaluation and implementation of process improvements and formulary management, and providing guidance in experiential education to pharmacy students and residents. The Pharmacy Manager- Drug Information will also engage in other management and leadership activities in collaboration with departments outside of Pharmacy.



Position Responsibilities:




Pharmaceutical Care Operations

  • Supervise drug information activities, including medication use evaluations and formulary management
  • Optimization of process flow and communication of professional pharmacy practices



Education

  • Participate in and oversee the experiential education of Pharmacy Residents and Pharmacy Students
  • Provide and/or coordinate educational activities for pharmacy staff and other health-system providers



Health Care System Improvement

  • Participate in the review of new medications, including usage, cost/benefit analysis, outcomes, and safety
  • Collaborate with other hospital departments/providers to evaluate, develop, and implement needed patient services
  • Ensure professional quality control standards are maintained through control of the medication use process
  • Lead system-wide Pharmacy and Therapeutics efforts towards creating a standardized formulary



Compliance and Regulatory Management

  • Ensure that staff comply with federal and state laws as well as regulatory agencies regarding applicable standards pertaining to the practice of pharmacy
  • Develop, review, and implement policies for the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceuticals and associated drug information services
  • Facilitate medication-related policy review and approval through required channels



Human Resource Management

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff
  • Provide professional, developmental and technical guidance and support to pharmacists
  • Assess employee skills and aptitude; provide development and career advancement opportunities when appropriate
  • Develop, implement and monitor performance improvement plans when indicated. Initiate corrective/disciplinary action



Financial Management

  • Develop and implement budgetary programs to decrease medication expenses, improve inventory management, and reduce medication waste
  • Monitor and address budget issues, including personnel expenses



Project Management

  • Project planning, development and design, budgeting, staffing, staff education/communication

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
  • Current license or eligibility to be licensed as Pharmacist by Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

Experience Requirements:

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Administration or Specialty Pharmacy Residency or minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a complex clinical pharmacy environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to act as preceptor
  • Job-related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Job-related experience in the inpatient care setting is desirable.
  • A Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA is desirable.
  • Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management and Epic electronic health record is highly desirable.
  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification is highly desirable.
