Job Description:

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities to set up, adjust and operate a Thermoformer machine. The Mechanic II is responsible for monitoring the Thermoforming production line and ensuring equipment is consistently running at the optimum settings. As an experienced mechanic, the Mechanic II has a high level of proficiency in the PVC and is competent to work independently in the majority of functions.  The Mechanic II model’s BAC’s values of Customer Focus, Teamwork, Leading Change, Execution, and Collaboration to co-workers and provide training to junior mechanics as assigned.  The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.

                                                         

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES


  • Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times

  • Operate all thermoformers and secondary operations with minimal supervision.

  • Responsible for the lock out tag out, mold change, and set-up of the thermoformer.


  • Follow proper lock out tag out procedures and safety policies.

  • Performs quality checks ensuring finished product meet specifications; stops line and notifies Station Leader in the event of a non-conformance.

  • Observe machine operations so that malfunctions can be detected; notifies supervisors and maintenance of any malfunctions or safety concerns.

  • Operates powered industrial equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Responsible for the daily inspection and sign-off log for all powered industrial equipment assigned to the area.

  • Build skids at an efficient rate utilizing various power tools.

  • Continuously grow skills and expertise in order to flex to the maximum number of workstations

  • Meet or exceed production goals for shift.


  • Help assist and train junior mechanics.

  • Knowledgeable of and meets quality standards on a consistent basis.

  • Committed to achieving departmental safety goals.


  • Maintains and sustain 5S in the department.

  • Fulfill the role of MI senior mechanic in his or her absence.


  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, and assigned.

NATURE & SCOPE

 

Reports to the Team Leader of the PVC department.  Work is primarily related to home department, but may be flexed to other departments as order demand dictates.  May be assigned the training and mentoring of junior mechanics.

 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS


  • Overall knowledge of thermoformer operations and all secondary machines in the department.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete mold changes and various set-ups on machines.

  • Knowledgeable on the different sizes of raw materials used for set-up and operation.

  • Knowledge of skid building, crating, and how to identify and interpret job paperwork.

  • Possess or ability to possess required lock out tag out certification within 60-days of hire.

  • Must demonstrate good organization and customer service skills.

  • Demonstrated competent writing skills including the ability to document a process in a logical and coherent manner.  Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or email that are professional, concise, and clearly understood.

  • Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customers and co-workers.  Will be required to have the ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate.

  • Competent in math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional computations, and fraction to decimal conversions.

  • Ability to use handheld measuring tools including tape measure, micrometer, and protractor.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate plant power tools, including but not limited to, the chop saw, nail gun, and staple gun.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and shop paperwork.


  • Good overall knowledge of the variety of BAC products.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of inventory management systems (e.g. PeopleSoft).

  • Possess or ability to possess any required powered industrial equipment certification within 90-days, including but not limited to, Forklifts, the Crown, Turret Lift, and Walkie.

  • Must be flexible and able to adapt quickly to change.

  • Understanding of intermediate LEAN principles including 5S, Kanban, one piece flow, and basic continuous improvement techniques

  • Familiar with all appropriate procedures, policies, and standard work instructions for their area

  • Demonstrated competence in BAC quality procedures and processes.

  • Computer skills include competence in locating relevant instructions and forms on the LAN or other databases.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time.  Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting.  Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes.  Exposures include elevated noise levels associated with a manufacturing environment, fluctuations in temperature ambient conditions as well as intermittent exposure to the weather in and about the yard and dock areas. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week.  Some weekend overtime is to be expected.  Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
