Ballard Spahr-a national law firm with offices in 15 U.S. locations-seeks a writer with experience covering the banking/consumer financial services industry to draft original content for our blogs, newsletters, and digital client mailings. The CFS Writer will work with attorneys in the firm's Business and Transactions Department and Consumer Financial Services and Mortgage Banking Groups to identify, draft, edit, and post content, ensuring that our blogs and thought leadership anticipate market trends, remain current with emerging and existing industry developments, and provide actionable insight to clients, most of whom are industry leaders in the consumer financial services space. This position is located in Philadelphia. However, we will consider a remote option if located in close proximity to one of our offices in Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, New Jersey, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Sioux Falls, Washington DC or Wilmington DE with the expectation to work in the office as needed.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Ghostwriting content for the firm's nationally recognized CF Monitor Blog, which covers developments at the CFPB, federal agencies, state agencies, and attorneys general.


  • Identifying trends in the financial services market and articulating how those developments will affect those in the consumer financial services industry.


  • Working with attorneys across the firm's corporate department to add legal insight and industry perspective to blog posts and other forms of thought leadership.


  • Contributing content, as needed, to firm blogs focused on a variety of topics such as money laundering, privacy and data security.


  • Collaborating with practice group leaders, attorneys, staff, and marketing professionals to create, maintain, and update accurate and effective thought leadership.


  • Providing guidance and support on blog writing and editing.


  • Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of the legal market and firm capabilities and applying that knowledge to the group's thought leadership.


  • Assisting in efforts to track and measure the effectiveness of the firm's blogs.


The CFS Writer must be detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet daily deadlines with poise, professionalism, and a customer service mindset. Candidates must be able to translate complex subject matter into accurate, concise, readable copy for a broad market. Strong organizational and project management skills, diplomacy, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently are required.

A bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of professional writing experience is mandatory, preferably covering banking and financial services with a focus on federal and state regulatory developments.

In addition to demonstrated skill as a writer and editor, candidates should have considerable knowledge of the financial services industry-including oversight agencies, such as the CFPB, and subject areas including mortgage banking, fair lending, debt collection, money laundering, privacy and data security, product development, and FinTech.
