Position Summary:

Reporting to the director of athletics, the deputy athletic director for external affairs & revenue generation serves on the athletic director's executive staff and is responsible for oversight of the external units of Rice Athletics, including fundraising, marketing/fan experience, creative, broadcast operations, ticket operations, and sponsorships. The incumbent will develop the appropriate strategies and partnerships to significantly enhance traditional and new revenue streams available to Rice's athletic department by using and developing industry best practices involving fundraising, ticket sales, naming rights and trademarks, merchandise, parking, marketing, and brand development, customer relations, the use of data, and other, yet unknown opportunities. This position will collaborate with Rice University on public relations for athletics and develop a comprehensive digital marketing strategy that furthers the national reputation of Rice Athletics in a measurable way. Finally, this position will oversee assigned administrative units and act as a sports administrator as assigned by the director of athletics.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person on campus during both regular office hours and at athletic events. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Six years of related experience
  • In lieu of the education/experience requirement, additional related education and/or experience, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis.

  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Foundation in problem solving and data analysis.
  • Strong relationship building.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.


Preferences:

  • MBA or similar advanced degree.
  • Professional experience in collegiate athletics or at an institution of higher education in an external revenue generating function (development, marketing & promotions, events, ticket sales, sponsorships, etc.).
  • Experience in managing and directing revenue generating activities for Division I or professional athletics organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships across campus and within the community.


Essential Functions:

  • Provides supervision and administrative oversight for athletics' external facing administrative units (fundraising, marketing/fan experience, creative, broadcast operations, ticket operations, and sponsorships).
  • Develops revenue generation strategic plans and recommendations for the director of athletics.
  • Collaborates with various campus and community entities to promote the strategic goals of the athletic department and Rice University.
  • Collaborates with the director of athletics and the athletics executive staff to set department policies and goals as applicable.
  • Forms strong alliances and relationships with the Houston community for the purpose of developing additional resources and cutting-edge opportunities.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
