Purpose of Position:

The Department of Physics, Computer Science and Engineering at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a Research Scientist in Theoretical Nuclear Physics. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate to contribute to our research program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) and to teach Physics courses at Christopher Newport University, with a base teaching load of 1-1. The group has research interests in nucleon structure, the strong interaction, applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in experimental simulation and data analysis. The group is involved in a number of projects with the JLab Theory Group and in experimental efforts in halls A, B and C.
The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the group contribution to JLab Theory Group research; these efforts include (but are not limited to) QCD global analysis of the partonic structure of hadrons and nuclei, hadronization dynamics in hard scattering processes and perturbative QCD calculations at the edge of phase space. Opportunities to contribute to new experiment proposals and engage in data analysis of experimental data are also anticipated.
The successful candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and to work with and mentor CNU students who are engaged in JLab research with the group.
This position requires a strong background in theoretical nuclear physicsand experience in teaching physics and mentoring students in research.

Required Education: A PhD in theoretical nuclear or particle physics and at least five years of post-PhD research experience is required at the time the appointment begins.



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses

  • Demonstrated ability to work and liaise with theorists and experimentalists

  • Experience in mentoring student research projects

  • Experience in organizing research conferences and advanced summer programs in nuclear physics

  • Demonstrated ability to develop an externally funded research program

The Department of Physics, Computer Science & Engineering at Christopher Newport University employs 32 full-time faculty and staff who collaborate closely across the disciplines.
