PA/ARNP Hospitalist- Inpatient Spine Service at University of Iowa

Job Description:

The APP in this position will manage Orthopedic Spine patients on the inpatient unit. The APP will work with faculty physicians, resident physicians, other APPs, and a multidisciplinary inpatient team to coordinate and deliver patient care. Duties would include rounding on patients daily, communicating with the team, documentation, placing orders, patient education, and facilitating discharge.

The APP would also assist with process improvement projects and service line advancements in order to improve patient outcomes and decrease complications. Additional duties include assisting with implementation of methods to capture appropriate billing/coding documentation in the EMR and providing cross coverage to other orthopedic services.



Position Responsibilities

  • Supervise the care delivered. Perform /order medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement. Consult/collaborate with other care team members. Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues. Influence others to adopt best practices.
  • Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes. Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
  • Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents. Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
  • Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care. Initiate corrective action as needed. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations. Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications. May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of specialized care. Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff. May have budget responsibilities for unit supervised. In collaboration within the surgeons, multidisciplinary team involved with their service, and Orthopedic Department Administrator, coordinate the continual monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness and operations of their team. Assist with identification and implementation of process improvement projects and service line advancements in order to improve patient outcomes and decrease complications. Assist with implementation of methods to capture appropriate billing/coding documentation in the EMR.

Educational Requirements:


ARNP: A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree or DNP in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required. Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

PA: Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. A Master's degree is highly desired.


Experience Required:

  • 1-3 years of patient care experience gained through education, job experience, or rotations is required
  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of orthopedic patient care is required
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of background and perspectives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Experience:

  • Experience working in medical-surgical inpatient, surgical inpatient, orthopedic inpatient, or orthopedic surgical setting is highly desired
  • PA: Master of Physician Assistantdegree is highly desired
