Job Description:

Catalog items for the permanent collection, create and edit metadata for Nebraska Memories, provide training on cataloging topics, and answer questions on cataloging issues for Nebraska library and media center staff. Work is performed independently under general supervision. Reports to Technology and Access Services Director.




  • Original and copy cataloging for state publications, federal publications and general materials as needed; review cataloging created or edited by Government Documents staff. Maintain OCLC local holdings records for periodicals.

  • Work closely with Government Documents, Acquisitions, and Information Services staff on the cataloging, weeding, inventory, and maintenance of the Library Commission collection.

  • Maintain records and holdings in local automated system; work with Computer Team on software upgrades and maintenance of local automated system.

  • Create and edit metadata records for Nebraska Memories, work with participants on providing needed information, maintain database of controlled vocabulary, and work with other Nebraska Memories team members.

  • Create class content and materials, and conduct cataloging training online and face-to-face.

  • Work with Technology and Access Services team, Government Documents team, Acquisitions and various other departments regarding technical services.

  • Answer questions from Nebraska library and media center staff regarding technical services issues by email or telephone.

  • Maintain cataloging and other Library Commission web pages as needed.

  • Write entries for the Library Commission blog on technical services topics.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association Accredited program, plus experience in professional library/information work.



Preferred Qualifications:




  • Minimum one year experience with professional MARC cataloging is essential.

  • Prefer 2-3 years professional cataloging experience with ability to create original MARC bibliographic and authority records for various material types using RDA; one year training experience.




Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:



  • Knowledge of RDA, AACR2, MARC bibliographic and authority records, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification Scheme, Dewey Decimal System, and familiarity with various cataloging tools.

  • Ability to review and edit copy cataloging.

  • Ability to create and edit MARC local holdings records.

  • Ability to create Dublin core metadata following local practice and procedure.

  • Experience with OCLC cataloging products.

  • Ability to plan, organize, prepare, and deliver effective instruction and/or presentations to diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills.

  • Must be willing to travel in-state; incumbents may be required to possess a valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation to perform work-related travel.




Hiring Specs:



  • $26.689/Hour (effective 7/01/2023)

  • Full time permanent position (40 hours weekly) Monday through Friday, 8-5.

  • Starting date: Until filled
