The Department of Mental Health Services promotes psychological health, well-being, and success for all Indiana University School of Medicine learners and trainees (medical and graduate students, residents and fellows) across the state of Indiana. We deliver professional and comprehensive counseling and psychiatric services, crisis intervention, programming, consultation services, and outreach, as well as support the broader School of Medicine community and foster an environment where learners can thrive. We serve a diverse learner population of approximately 3400 trainees statewide. DMHS is invested in providing care that is inclusive and culturally informed. Job Summary



Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Conducts diagnostic assessments.

  • Provides direct clinical care to medical trainees through the mental health services program at IUSM, including initial assessments, crisis counseling, crisis intervention, individual and couples psychotherapy, and psychological testing.

  • Provides in-person and teletherapy services when appropriate for medical trainees at several of the IUSM regional campuses as well as at the Indianapolis campus.

  • Provides direct clinical mental health services to individuals, groups and couples in-person and via teletherapy.

  • Manages individual caseload to allow for incorporation of new clients in an ongoing manner.

  • Maintains accurate, timely clinical notes, following quality improvement committee standards.

  • Adheres to relevant ethical and legal standards of HIPAA, relevant professional bodies, and state boards.

  • Utilizes evidence-based clinical interventions for a wide range of concerns such as mood disorders, substance use disorder, adjustment disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorders.

  • Triages referrals.

  • Provides crisis management and stabilization as well as provide some after-hours back-up call coverage.

  • Collaborates with members of the mental health services team.

  • Consults with and refers to other professionals when appropriate (e.g., psychiatrists, medical providers, etc.).

  • Communicates with referral sources within the IU system (program directors, lead advisors, faculty, etc.).

  • Facilitates treatment planning including referrals to providers outside of the IU system for outpatient and in-patient care as needed, coordinate post-hospitalization care.

  • Provides consultation to faculty, administrators, and stakeholders for issues that have psychological dimensions.

  • Designs and delivers psycho-educational programming, orientation sessions and community outreach services for IUSM medical trainees.

  • Works effectively as a collaborative member of the mental health services team to develop and implement programs.

  • Participates in the assessment, implementation, and development of improvements to the delivery of mental health services and program provided to medical learners statewide.

  • Engages in strategic planning efforts for psychoeducational, preventative mental health and wellness initiatives.

  • Collaborates with medical education offices and other stakeholders.

  • Participates in research efforts including assessment of program outcomes, and tracking and evaluation of delivery of mental health services.

  • May supervise master's level trainees and clinicians.

  • Attends DMHS clinical and staff meetings.

  • Completes scheduling of patients and documentation of clinical work in a timely and complete manner.

  • Provides regular reports regarding work activities to Director.

  • Participates in case conferences and clinical supervision.

  • Evaluates and treats mental health concerns.

  • Contributes toward personal development, maturation, and wellness.

  • Facilitates adjustment to the School of Medicine, residency training programs, and fellowship programs.

  • Supports academic persistence.




General Responsibilities


  • Provides direct clinical service including evaluation and testing to identify cognitive difficulties that may impede the patient's normal functions.

  • Provides individual, group, and relationship counseling.

  • Provides crisis intervention and online counseling.

  • Documents clinical activities according to standards, procedures, and policies.

  • Provides individual clinical supervision to counselors/psychologists in training.

  • Facilitates group case consultation for counselors/psychologists in training.

  • Provides direct observation and video review of clinical sessions to provide feedback.

  • Reviews and co-signs all clinical documentation for supervised positions.

  • Participates in community outreach programs regarding mental health.




Qualifications



EDUCATION



Required



  • Ph.D. in psychology from an APA accredited program.

WORK EXPERIENCE



Required



  • 1 year of post-doctoral clinical service under supervision of a licensed psychologist.

  • Completion of a pre-doctoral internship that meets licensure standards for the State of Indiana.


Preferred



  • 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with university-ages, graduate, medical, and diverse student populations.

  • Experience with triage and crisis care.

  • Experience with mental health systems within state of Indiana.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES



Required



  • Licensed Psychologist must be licensed in the State of Indiana or be eligible for licensure within 180 days from date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
