Job Description:

Will train! Full-time, 40 hours per week, Day shift




Job Summary:



Under general supervision, performs various repairs, maintenance and construction for all NCH buildings, grounds and housing, Work requires initiative and judgment.



Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities



  • Receives and performs assignments and work orders as assigned by the Department Manager and Supervisors for general maintenance work and preventative maintenance work.

  • Performs inspection rounds of the Hospital, checking air-conditioning, refrigeration, fire equipment, fans, motors, lights, and other equipment for proper operation, documenting any problems and follow-ups as appropriate and reporting same to Manager.

  • Repairs or replaces broken or faulty equipment as necessary or as directed.

  • Answers repair calls and/or requests as assigned for beds, lights, leaks, plugged drains, patient-care equipment, and other related repairs or equipment as necessary or assigned.

  • Provides general assistance to other tradesmen or vendors as directed.

  • Operates snow removal equipment to remove snow by plowing and/or salting and shoveling Hospital properties in accordance with procedures for same.

  • Operates emergency power generators and monitors equipment while in operation.

  • Demonstrates and executes knowledge of steam and water shut offs and electrical breakers in the event of an emergency.

  • Participates in fire drills, Emergency Preparedness Plan, and other mandatory Hospital activities.

  • Delivers and/or picks up various items to various locations throughout the Island as directed.

  • Under the direction of the Manger of Plant Operations, participates in Hospital, municipal, or state-sponsored or mandated security, safety, and fire safety in-services and/or continuing education programs. Remains up to date on current standards and protocols for each, including the appropriate identification, response, and communication mechanisms for security, safety, and fire safety issues.

  • Assists other departments in emergency or non-emergency situations as may be directed within the scope of qualifications and duties.

  • Assists in Med Flight safety operations. Secures designated areas and directs safety procedures to personnel around the Med Flight area per the NCH procedure manual.

  • Assists in small projects as directed by the department manager.






Qualifications

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position




Ability to:



  • Demonstrate exemplary behavior at all times contributing to the total team concept of the department.

  • Operate hand tools, power tools, equipment, and electrical testing equipment requiring manual dexterity.

  • Work without direct supervision.

  • Utilize computer, printer, copier, telephone, calculator, cell phone, 2-way radio.

  • Stand, sit, walk, climb, bend, use knees, use back, some crawling required.

  • Lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Utilize face shield, masks, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses, goggles, and other personal protective equipment applicable to the task being performed.

  • Vision is required to review, read and input data, differentiate colors. Hearing is required in order to receive information via telephone or in person. Verbal skills are required in order to provide and receive information. The use of hands/fingers is required for data input.

  • Drive pick up truck, van, and other non-commercially classed vehicles.

  • To contribute to and work within a safe working environment.

  • Ability to climb ladders and work at high levels as necessary.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Perform a variety of tasks as they relate to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical and related trades.


Credentials and Experience Required

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency required.

  • Post-High School technical training of at least one year preferred.

  • Current, valid driver's license required.

  • Experience performing skilled construction, maintenance and repair work preferred.


Special Requirements

  • Must be available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties.

  • On call evenings, nights, and weekends on a rotating basis for emergency purposes or repairs.

  • May be assigned overtime hours for weekend functions.

  • Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
