Reliability/Maintenance Engineer - Ft. Smith, AR

The Reliability Engineer will have a strong passion and drive to eliminate all maintenance losses in the site by using proven technical tools to develop maintenance strategies for both new and existing equipment. This role must be a leader in maintenance improvement tools (PM Optimization, RCM, RCA, FMEA, etc.) and knowledgeable in predictive maintenance tools (Vibration, Ultrasound, Thermography, etc).

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical discipline is preferred (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering) or 10 years of related experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) or American Society for Quality - Certified Reliability Engineer (ASQ CRE) is recommended. Candidate is required to complete one of two within first year of job.


Skills/Experience:

  • Demonstrated capability to develop effective maintenance strategies to reduce technical losses in manufacturing site.

  • Experienced at using data to find the root cause of complex problems.

  • Solid track record of high-speed packaging and high volume processing equipment management.

  • Knowledge and experience with advanced maintenance management practices is preferred.

  • Contemporary leadership, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects/initiatives within budget limits.

  • Some travel may be required.

What you will be your key responsibilities:


  • Professionally and systematically define, design, develop, monitor and refine the maintenance strategies for both new and existing equipment at the site. This includes:

    • Proper operation and care of equipment.

    • Comprehensive lubrication program (requirements, frequencies, and methods of application).

    • Inspections, adjustments, replacements, overhauls for selected equipment.

    • Vibration, Ultrasound, Infra-red and other predictive analyses and interpretation of results.

    • Logical decision making on assets to Run-To-Failure when appropriate.



  • Guides efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls, and safety/security systems.

  • Develop consistent maintenance strategies and processes across Mars Chocolate by working with peers.

  • Achieve and maintain a high level of technical competency in advanced maintenance technology.

  • Support Maintenance Techs who have area responsibility to improve the maintenance strategies for their areas by training, coaching, and assessing the maintenance improvement tools.

  • Analyze equipment failure data patterns to establish P-F Curves and Intervals for potential failures and use to appropriately prioritize, plan, and schedule to minimize downtime.

  • Coordinate with Planner/Scheduler to ensure that PM/PdM services and inspections are scheduled and performed when due and that resultant corrective work is promptly prioritized and performed.


  • Reduces and improves maintenance work wherever feasible; ensuring efficient and reliable operation of plant, process and equipment while protecting and prolonging the economic life of plant assets at optimal cost.

    • Develops solutions to repetitive failures and other maintenance problems.

    • Identifies and corrects chronic, repetitive and costly equipment problems.

    • Provides technical advice to maintenance area owners.

    • Implements methods to reduce the need for maintenance and ultimately eliminate the occurrence of failures to increase Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and decrease Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).



  • Supports Planner/Scheduler in development of technical, environmental or complex safety work procedures.

  • Routinely contributes to the planning of realistic production capacity based upon analysis of preventive maintenance time needs, failure history.

  • Apply value analysis to repair/replace, repair/redesign, and make/buy decisions.

  • Gate keeper of all new projects and changes at the site to ensure that proper failure mode analysis is applied before the design and installation.

  • Ensures that spare parts list, equipment manuals and prints are provided for all new installations and that they are consistent with established standards.

  • Lead maintenance improvement programs at site such as: Asset criticality Identification, PM Screening, Equipment Maintenance Strategies, and Asset Refurbishment/Obsolescence Plan.

  • Lead Breakdown Analysis (BDAs) problem solving activities for critical events at site. Train other associates on this process.

  • Interpret SAP PM maintenance data to generate priorities and action list for improving reliability of site.

  • Present improvement opportunities and plans to Site Leadership Team.

  • Keep up to date with new technologies and processes outside of MCNA that improve reliability. Some of these areas include: Preventive Maintenance, Predictive Maintenance, Equipment Criticality Assessment, & KPIs.

  • The maintenance/reliability function must justify its existence on a profit-improvement basis. Quarterly and year-end reports should be generated to this end.

  • Develop and implement proactive maintenance strategy for site or area to deliver equipment reliability (Planned and Unplanned Maintenance Losses) for agreed cost (labor and expenses)

  • Train & coach technical associates to be proficient in advanced maintenance tools.

  • Recognize and develop talent with their teams through special assignments and projects.

  • Help deliver Food Safety and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that protect brands with over $1 Billion dollars in sales yearly.
