Position Summary The Director of Residence Life position is a full time, 12-month staff member who is responsible for overseeing the university residential education student experience. Under administrative direction from the Dean of Students/AVP for Student Development & Campus Life, this educator and administrator provides visionary leadership and direction for the department; Crisis Intervention and management; administers and manages the student housing experience program for the University; directs departmental operations; oversees the department budget; sets department goals; coordinates assessment efforts; establishes learning outcomes and implementation strategies for the department. The Director has direct supervision of 3-6 full-time Area Coordinator who supervise 3 additional full-time professionals and/or graduate students and undergraduate para-professional staff members. The Director also serves as the on-call supervisor and provides training and support to the Coordinator on Call team.
Essential Duties
  • Provide leadership, professional development, and ongoing support to all aspects of the Residence Life program:
    • Supervise 3-6 full-time Area Coordinators and have indirect supervision responsibility for up to 6 additional full-time and/or Graduate Assistants, as well as up to 45 paraprofessional residential staff
    • Oversee strategic execution of residential education goals in alignment with university strategic plan and divisional goals
    • Maintain oversite of operational/programming budget
    • Lead and assess programming curriculum within the residential facilities that address the developmental needs of students during various stages of their La Salle experience, including the Freshmen Year Experience Initiatives program and implementation of the Sophomore year experience
    • Create opportunities and structures within the living/learning environment that assist students’ adjustment to independent living.
    • Facilitate the proper maintenance of housing facilities in collaboration with Facilities Management.
    • Facilitate the safety and security of housing for resident students and their guests in collaboration with Public Safety.
    • Respond through personal contact with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders to resolve issues, answer questions, and clarify policy.
    • Maintain a visible presence in the residence halls as a live-on professional and engage in positive, professional interactions with students after business hours to promote community development.
    • Assess the needs, satisfaction and experience of residential students and apply finding to enhance the residential student experience. Clearly communicate the assessment outcomes in a timely manner to appropriate University administration.
    • Collaborate effectively and consistently with the other members of the SDCL team to provide students with a safe and healthy living and learning environment.
    • Advise Resident Student Government Association
    • Manage logistics of Themed Community Living and Living Learning Communities including evaluation of program, advisor recruitment, and collaboration with academic university partners
  • Collaborate with the housing services and operations program:
    • Assist with logistics of and communication about housing selection processes, early arrivals, opening weekend move-in, end of the year closing and housing extension processes.
    • Make recommendations for housing occupancy/usage based on residential student experience, retention, and projected occupancy
    • Assist with upholding professional staff live-in agreement, inspections, and proper check-in and check outs
  • Supervise the SDCL “Coordinator on Call” system:
    • Serves as an on-call supervisor and provides training and support to the on-call supervisor team.
    • Serve on the supervisor on call emergency duty rotation
    • Manages the crises response procedures, manuals, and training for after-hours crises response for all levels of the residence hall on-call rotation in collaboration with the office of student conduct.
    • Ensure that appropriate incident response procedures are followed, and that training and accountability measures are implemented.
    • Provide oversight for on-call staff availability and/or presence during times of typically high activity as well as at significant incidents both on and off campus.
  • Support the Office of Student Conduct and Student Code of Conduct:
    • Serve as an informal and formal hearing officer adjudicating cases of student misconduct
    • Serve as a backup student conduct officer for student misconduct and Title IX violations for the university.
    • Evaluate and update, when necessary, residence hall specific community standards
    • Facilitate a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
    • Assist with relevant hearing officer supervision, training, development and accountability.

Secondary Responsibilities
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Dean of Students/Assistant Vice President and Vice President for Student Development & Campus Life
  • Participates actively in University governance through committee assignments and other responsibilities assigned by the Dean of Students
  • Participates actively in division and University programs, activities, ceremonies, and celebrations, some of which are held during evening or weekend hours.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Division of Student Development & Campus Life by performing all other duties assigned by the Dean of Student/Assistant Vice President for Student Development & Campus Life

# of Direct Reports 3-6 pro staff and up to 55 paraprofessional staff
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, higher education or other relevant field.
  • Six to ten years of professional experience in student affairs, with increasing responsibilities and emphasis in residence life and student housing
  • Working knowledge of legal and compliance issues related student housing and occupancy agreements.
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures.
  • Extensive experience working with university public safety, student counseling, alcohol and other drug educators and leadership development
  • Excellent administrative, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations in an urban setting
  • Extensive experience with policy development and review
  • Experience with online platforms such as THD and Maxient
  • Experience with student life on an urban, Catholic residential campus and commitment to the ongoing enhancement of student learning and student life in such a setting.
  • Experience with supporting and advocating students from diverse populations
  • Specialized knowledge- Student Development Theory and Community Based Theory and those implications within a university setting.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, attention to detail, and basic understanding of assessing data.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours • Must have the ability to be mobile throughout the La Salle University campus and surrounding neighborhood
Special Instructions to Applicant Housing provided to all live-on staff will include furniture, a washer/dryer, and a kitchen. A parking pass will also be made available to those who qualify. While all on-campus housing is not the same size in terms of square footage, Residence Life will work to ensure that all live-on staff have equitable amenities.
