Job Description:

Fiber Technician

Erwin, TN

The technician will install, troubleshoot and maintain Fiber Optic, Cat6 and low voltage Cables as and when required, provide technical assistance in designing, testing, and support of communication infrastructure systems.

They will work both in office and industrial plant facilities and are responsible for taking care of installation, troubleshooting and other technical aspects. Must have knowledge of various electronic components, camera systems, computer operating systems, including routers and other networking equipment.

Experience and understanding of cabling various electronic components. Must have basic knowledge of the operation and application of electrical components and common measurement instruments. They must have hands-on experience to work with hand and power tools.

Qualifications:

• Resolve, repair and install fiber optics systems and ensure that they work properly.  Familiar with OTDR testing


• Install, troubleshoot access controls, cameras, cat6 and fiber optic devices.


• Examine and replace faulty and old cabling infrastructure and organize scheduled maintenance routines


• Take care of fiber splicing and rectify fiber optic problem areas


• Develop sensor indicators and conduct timely inspections to make sure that faulty communications systems do not destabilize its performance


• Execute premises cabling and take care of the underground and underwater cabling requirements


• Keep track of the signal strength of different devices such as television and telephone to provide adequate performance


• Formulate and maintain system records and system designs

 

Additional Functions

• Postsecondary education in electronics, telecommunications, or computer technology. They should also have on-the-job training and industry certification is an added advantage.


• Most employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in fiber optics communications. The individual can also enroll in a technical or vocational program to gain some knowledge of Fiber Optics and Fiber Networks.

 Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum 3 to 5 years documented field experience.


• Broad understanding of cabling and telecommunications methods and applications.


• Post-secondary degree a plus, but not required.

 Requirements:

• Arrive at work on time, as scheduled, consistently, reliably, & complete each shift


• Follow all safety rules and standards for the company and for the site


• Understand and follow Instructions from the direct supervisor

 Physical Profile Requirements: 

The job requires occasionally remaining on one's feet in an upright position without moving for long periods of time, occasionally moving about on foot for long periods of time, remaining in a seated position for long periods of time, and/or climbing stairs, step-ladders, extension ladders and scaffolding ladders. The job also requires the ability to raise or lower an object of approximately 5-50 pounds from one level to another, the ability to transport an object of up to 50 pounds a distance of up to 10 yards, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder, the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly so that an object moves away from the force, and/or the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly so that an object moves toward the force.

Must be capable of operating a standard 1/2 ton pick-up for occasional delivery and pick-up of materials and personnel and hold a valid, unrestricted motor vehicle operator's license issued by the state of residence, and the manual dexterity necessary to operate a standard desktop computer keyboard.
