Description Position Title: Graduate Assistant - Beard Center on Aging
Supervisor's Title & Department: Director of The Beard Center on Aging
Session: Academic (August 12, 2024 - May 16, 2025) This is a one-year placement with an opportunity for re-application and hire.
Hourly Rate & Leadership Classification: $20.00
Average hours per week: Up to 16 hours per week
Job Purpose: The graduate assistant assists in the daily functions of the Beard Center on Aging including event coordination and marketing promotion.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist with special projects and community events including a Regional Health Fair, Lynchburg City's Rec Tech program that will help older adults learn to use technology, a regional Aging in Place Expo, a conference on Aging, and a statewide effort to develop brain healthy communities

  • Work with the Beard Center's local Consortium on Aging that is comprised of agencies, organizations, and individuals in southwestern Virginia working together to create communities for all ages

  • Assist with the scheduling, support, and supervision of six work-study students, volunteers, and interns

  • Assist the director in the development and presentation of of programs for community education, professional training, and classroom lectures

  • Assist with the management of the Genworth Aging and Caregiving Resource Center including handling information and referral requests (under the director's supervision) that come in from the community and the securing of new resources for the Center

  • Assist the Administrative Assistant as needed

  • Answer the phone and assist persons who come in and need assistance when the Director and Administrative Assistant is not available

  • Assist with event planning meetings including leading meetings, taking notes, and leading projects
