The Math Lab Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of instructional support activities in the Math Lab. This includes tutoring students, assisting with mathematical related technology, and administering programs run through the Math Lab.
Math Lab Supervisor

Associate degree or equivalent of 60 successful college credit hours, including:
Fifteen (15) credit hours of college-level mathematics (with a grade of B or better)
OR
Twelve (12) credit hours of Calculus (with a grade of B or better)
(The individual must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or with out reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.)
Knowledge of or willingness to learn or review:
- TI-84 and TI-89 graphing calculators
- mathematical software (such as Maple or Geometer's Sketchpad)
- computerized tutorial programs (such as MyMathLab, ConnectMath, or WebAssign)
- any Math and Statistics courses taught at OCCC
- tablet technology
- any new programs and equipment used in the lab and/or math classes
- multiple methods of tutoring mathematical concepts including tutoring using manipulatives
Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office.
Organization and attention to detail.
Discretion with passwords and student information.
Ability to use, and ability to explain the use of the calculators, mathematical software, and computerized tutorial programs to students.
Ability to interact in an effective and encouraging manner with students individually and in groups.
Ability to communicate and articulate mathematical concepts in an organized manner.
Ability to read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting mathematical concepts.
Satisfy objectives for mutually agreed upon special assignments.
Ability to circulate throughout the lab.
Must follow directions and guidelines.
Must file alphabetically.
Must be punctual and reliable.
Flexibility in work schedule.
1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to frequently move about the Math Lab to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.
This position frequently requires the person to operate a computer and other office/lab equipment to perform the essential functions of the position.
This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
This position requires the person to occasionally position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.
This position requires the person to frequently position self to work with lab equipment or assist students.
3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position performs the essential functions in an indoor, office or lab setting.

Appropriate Tutor Training and Tutor Certification as offered by OCCC.
Schedule to be determined each semester and intersession to meet the needs of the Math Lab. Work times will be during the hours campus is open including evenings and Saturdays.

Tutor Students
Help students with math assignments by asking questions, looking at student work, assessing the student's level of understanding, encouraging them to think through problems, use their resources, talk through problems, and work through problems. Circulate throughout the lab regularly to assist students at tables and computers.
Instruct and assist students in the use of mathematical related technology such as the graphing calculators (TI-84, TI-89), mathematical software, and computerized tutorial programs through demonstration.
Assist with administering and maintaining the Calculator Lease Program and the Instructor Resource Database.
Develop, schedule, and present workshops for students on various topics such as using the TI-84 calculators, math concepts, etc.
Provide services to students and faculty in the Math Lab:
- Maintain system of filing of instructional software, textbooks, and solution manuals.
- Monitor central counter to keep assets and materials secure.
- Maintain notebook for reserving math lab computer areas and laptop carts on weekly schedules for the semester and assist instructors with reservations.
- Answer phone to provide information and mathematics tutoring.
- Administer the temporary loan of texts and calculators within the Math Lab.
- Maintain documents, schedules, handouts, and printing for staff and student needs.
- Provide e-tutoring to online or distance students.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
- Assist students with printing of assignments.
Assist with scheduling of staff and activities in the Math Lab.
Mentor and train new tutors and assistants.
Collect and report Math Lab usage data.
Inventory items in the lab and classrooms.
Open and close the Math Lab by following established procedures as assigned.
Help enforce all Math Lab policies.
Participate in training concerning mathematics courses and/or tutoring by attending designated training sessions and completing requested activities.
Participate in college initiatives and staff development programs and training.
Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures (http://www.occc.edu/policy/)
