Centralia College is located on a 30-acre campus in the heart of Centralia, Washington and has been serving students in the Lewis County region since 1925. As a comprehensive community college, Centralia College offers academic transfer and workforce programs, as well as adult basic education, ELL, and personal enrichment classes. The college also offers five Bachelor of Applied Science degrees: Information Technology - Application Development, Diesel Technology, Applied Management (Business), Behavioral Healthcare and Teacher Education.

In addition to the main campus in Centralia, Centralia College East in Morton is a smaller site that serves the needs of students in east Lewis County. Since the college is committed to the success of all students, Centralia College also provides educational programs at two corrections centers in southwest Washington - Garrett Heyns Education Center located in Shelton, Washington and the Cedar Creek Corrections Center located in Littlerock, Washington. Job Description Centralia College is creating a pool of qualified applicants to teach Journalism courses at the Garrett Heyns Education Center inside the Washington Corrections Center. The Washington Corrections Center is a medium/maximum security fenced facility in Shelton, WA. To find out more about the facility, please visit https://www.doc.wa.gov/corrections/incarceration/prisons/wcc.htm. The college's need for part-time instructors varies from quarter to quarter.This is an on-campus assignment at Garrett Heyns Education Center in Shelton with face-to-face instruction in the evening, usually one day a week. Successful applicants must reside in Washington State and will need to pass additional screening and background review required by Washington State Department of Corrections.Additional in-person teaching opportunities may arise at the college's main campus in Centralia; its satellite campus in Morton, WA; the Chehalis Tribal Center in Oakville, WA; within other correctional and juvenile detention facilities in the area; or online.Duties and Responsibilities Journalism instructors are responsible for teaching a variety of courses, including Introduction to News Writing, Issues in Mass Media, and Copy Editing and Newspaper Design.Qualifications

Master's or higher degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Communication, or a closely related field

Or

A bachelor's degree in Journalism or a closely related field, andDemonstrated professional expertise as a journalist

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a working journalist, especially as an editor or producer.Teaching experience at a community college level.Previous experience working with incarcerated populations.Skill in increasing inclusivity and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students.Ability to adapt teaching to various student learning styles.Demonstrated experience effectively and respectfully working with students, staff, and colleagues of various cultural, ethnic, racial, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds.Experience with Microsoft 365 applications, college learning management systems (Canvas), and other appropriate instructional technologies.Ability to teach courses in Mass Media, including Introduction to Mass Media.

COMPENSATION:

Current lecture/lab rates ($886.41 - $1,358.22 per credit)
