From the Upstate to the Lowcountry, the University of South Carolina system is transforming the lives of South Carolinians through the impact of our eight institutions and 20 locations throughout the state. More than 50,000 students are enrolled at one of eight institutions, including the research campus in Columbia and comprehensive four-year universities in Aiken, Upstate and Beaufort. In addition, our Palmetto College campuses in Salkehatchie, Union, Lancaster and Sumter enable students to earn associate or bachelor's degrees through a combination of in-person, online or blended learning. All of our system institutions place strong emphasis on service - helping to build healthier, more educated communities in South Carolina and beyond.
At the University of South Carolina, we strive to cultivate an inclusive environment that is open, welcoming, and supportive of individuals of all backgrounds. We recognize diversity in our workforce is essential to providing academic excellence and critical to our sustainability. The University is committed to eliminating barriers created by institutional discrimination through accountability and continuous process improvement. We celebrate the diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences of our employees.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks to hire a Post-Doctoral Fellow to develop microbial heterologous expression systems via synthetic biology technologies, aiming to utilize the vast genetic potentials of the biosynthetic gene clusters from cultivatable microbes for production of bioactive natural products, such as antibiotics and anticancer agents. Following the establishment of a high efficiency heterologous expression system, the selected promising biosynthetic gene clusters will be cloned/synthesized and expressed in this heterologous expression system for production of the corresponding compounds. The production level and chemical diversity will be further tuned by genetic manipulation. In addition, the biological and/or physiological activities of the compounds discovered will be studied.
Additional job responsibilities include contributing to writing manuscripts and reports on funded projects and assisting in training graduate and undergraduate students in their research.
PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or a closely related science with experience in microbial genetics, gene editing, and synthetic biology.
Knowledge of microbial genetics and synthetic biology are required; Enzymology, natural products chemistry, and biological evaluation would be a plus. Strong communication and writing abilities are also required.
