Intern Responsibilities and Learning Objectives
Monitor nests at boxes across about 15 sites in the greater Baton Rouge area, which include a mix of forested wetlands (i.e., swamp forests), bottomland hardwood forests, and similar habitats.
Search for nests of target species.
Collect fecal samples from nestlings.
Resight color-banded birds.
Assist in the banding of focal species.
Record field data and input into an online database, MS Excel, and Google Drive spreadsheets.
We anticipate that 80% of the position will be field-based and the other 20% will be office- and laboratory-based.
Field survey methodologies for monitoring birds, including nest searching, nest monitoring, and bird banding.
Laboratory organizational skills.
Networking with university and NGO staff.
Building relationships with volunteers and community scientists.
Professional development.
The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate student at Louisiana State University studying wildlife management, ornithology, ecology, biology, or a related field. Applicants with B.S. degrees or currently studying at other universities will also be considered.
Candidate should be willing to live in the greater Baton Rouge, LA area; housing is not provided.
Must be willing to work outside under physically demanding conditions (hot, humid, biting insects, spider webs, swampy conditions).
Excellent interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills.
Must have strong organizational skills and great attention to detail.
Must be comfortable interacting with the public and staff of multiple partner organizations.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel and Word are desired.
Must properly maintain field equipment and keep supplies and materials organized.
