About the role:

We are currently seeking aSenior Belt Coordinatorto join our production team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.

Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, this area offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Oakman is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, both of which provide diverse, family-friendly communities with something for everyone, such as vibrant downtowns, safe, friendly neighborhoods, and excellent schools, including the University of Alabama and other area colleges.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Belt Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining a 14-mile belt system and managing the efficient utilization of manpower and equipment resources. In addition, this role is also responsible for ensuring business goals are met in a safe and effective manner while maintaining compliance with federal, state, local, and company requirements.

Duties will include:


  • Work with each department to ensure planning is optimized and there is efficient use of all resources at the mine.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement (CI) strategies targeting safety, reliability, and cost savings.
  • Timely escalation of belt issues that impact safety of people or production to the General Mine Coordinator and senior leadership.
  • Ensure effective project management of major overhaul and repair equipment including planning, implementation, and budgeting.
  • Organize unforeseen mine outages by ensuring downtime work is being managed and structured effectively to maximize the downtime.
  • Life of Mine strategic planning, equipment lifecycle management, and project requirements.
  • Ensure all major maintenance outages and projects have a clear scope of work, project schedule (Gantt chart), forecast costing, quality assurance procedures, and commissioning documentation.
  • Manages belt personnel and performs effective belt audits to insure accurate and proper procedures and measures are being utilized to control, monitor, record, and report performance data for all belt, actual production, cost, and performance data for all mining and reclamation activities at the mine.

About You:


  • Must possess high school diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree in engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of underground coal mining belt system experience is required.
  • Minimum 10-12 years of supervisory experience.
  • Current electrical card preferred.
  • Alabama Mine Foreman Certification preferred.
  • High level of understanding MSHA regulations and Mechanical and Electrical Codes of Practice required.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal mining regulations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be willing to work any shift and respond to emergency calls at any time.
  • Ability to communicate with personnel on shift and adjacent shifts.
  • Experience in Planning and Execution Techniques.
  • Knowledge of SAP and Kronos preferred.
  • Knowledge of conducting safety inspections and completing risk assessments.
  • PLC programming preferred.
  • Previous supervisor skills involving scheduling of manpower and equipment resources, and employee performance management.

Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Ability to be seated up to 4 hours to operate equipment.
  • Ability to walk up to 4 hours at a time andthrough different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required by MSHA.
  • Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPErequired by Company and MSHA
  • Ability to climb up and down stairsand on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle)and rapid reflex movements of arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.
