Position Summary:

Midnight Sun Technologies is seeking resumes from qualified Geotechnical Research Engineers (GT-RE) for multiple levels (entry level through senior level) to support a Federal research contract in McLean, VA.


This position investigates the performance of geotechnical features, whether natural or manufactured, as they intersect with and influence the performance of the highway infrastructure including bridge foundations and retaining wall systems. The lab studies the interaction with both the environment (e.g., scour, temperature, moisture) and structural elements (e.g., steel, concrete, geosynthetics).


This position is contingent upon contract award.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the planning, conducting, and reporting of geotechnical research projects performed under the contract.
  • Conduct laboratory, field, and/or numerical experiments as outlined in the specific research focus areas for the geotechnical research program.
  • Program, operate, setup, and install instrumentation systems either in the laboratory or at field sites.
  • Provide numerical modeling to include pre- and post-processing, with the ability to simulate both geotechnical and structural transportation features under various environmental effects and loading conditions.
  • Analyze data and review, comprehend, and synthesize the literature on a variety of topics within the research focus areas.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science, Master of Science or Engineering, or Doctorate in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering or in Engineering Geology from an ABET accredited institution or international equivalent.
  • Hands-on research experience planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on applied geotechnical-related research activities beyond those required for the educational degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write publication-ready research reports as well as participate and present during demonstration projects, seminars, webinars, committee meetings, and workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality research projects, publications, and notable public-facing engagements considered a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance and site access.
