Position Summary:

Midnight Sun Technologies is seeking resumes from qualified Geotechnical Research Technicians of all levels (entry level through senior level) to support a Federal research contract in McLean, VA.

This position investigates the performance of geotechnical features, whether natural or manufactured, as they intersect with and influence the performance of the highway infrastructure including bridge foundations and retaining wall systems. The lab studies the interaction with both the environment (e.g., scour, temperature, moisture) and structural elements (e.g., steel, concrete, geosynthetics).

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Assist in execution of research projects and to maintain the state of good repair and cleanliness of the laboratory.
• Responsible for setting up tests, installing instrumentation, conducting tests, and acquiring data in the laboratories.
• Coordinate research plans with engineering staff and take the lead to implement these plans with minimal supervision.
• Perform standard geotechnical laboratory tests per ASTM and AASHTO procedures and have knowledge of standard geotechnical monitoring equipment.
• Provide demonstrated experience in geotechnical foundation testing techniques.
• Direct the work of a team of Laborers for projects.
• Assis in operating, setting up, and conducting tests or working with instrumentation systems either in the Laboratory or at field sites.

Minimum Requirements:

• At least two years of technical training in engineering technician skills, computer science, or electronics, and a good level of mechanical aptitude.
• Broad grasp of all relevant laboratory/field test procedures and instrumentation requirements.
• Ability to collect and present test results, review, and synthesize the literature on a variety of topics
• Data analysis capabilities and possess good communication skills.
• Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance and site access.

Preferred Requirements:

• S. degree in a scientific or engineering field.
• Experience in a geotechnical laboratory with demonstrated experience in geotechnical laboratory testing, including knowledge of standard AASHTO and ASTM soil test methods and techniques, particularly large sample testing methods.
• Progressive experience in a geotechnical laboratory and good familiarity with instrumentation.
• Knowledge and experience in setting up large-scale direct shear, large-diameter triaxial, resilient modulus, erosion function apparatus, and interface shear experiments and/or laboratory and field load test experiments.
• Completion of advanced geotechnical laboratory training or certification programs,
