Job Description:


Duties: The Protocol Specialist/IACUC Administrator's (PS/IA) primary role will be to focus on performing and managing IACUC pre-review of protocols and amendments, as well as help coordinate administrative and technical projects within the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW). In conjunction with the other members of the administrative team, the PS/IA will perform protocol and amendment pre-reviews, manage the IACUC review process, and serve as the first line of support for the research community for questions about the online protocol system (ARIES) and protocol reviews. Additional support provided to the research community will include providing training for ARIES protocol submissions and participating in the Laboratory Animal Research Coordinator (LARC) training program. The PS/IA will also assist with subaward and memorandum of understanding (MOU) requests, protocol-grant congruency checks, website maintenance, and act as a liaison with technical support services. Additional duties include helping to prepare for and attending IACUC meetings (navigating review of documents and protocol submissions, recording decisions, and generating minutes), assisting with training for new IACUC members, maintaining office standard operating procedures, managing inter-office webinars on animal welfare topics, and serving as an ad-hoc member of the IACUC Training Subcommittee.



Qualifications: A Master's degree in science is required, preferably in the biology or animal science fields, with a PhD degree highly preferred. Two to three years of experience with IACUC-related work and/or basic animal research is required. CPIA (or eligible for exam) is preferred. Excellent attention to detail, written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal and customer service skills are required for protocol reviews and interactions with PIs, laboratory personnel, and the IACUC Committee and subcommittees. A customer service attitude is also necessary. Proficiency with various computer programs (databases and web-based applications) will be essential to complete all duties performed by the Protocol Specialist/IACUC Administrator. The ability to multi-task, organize various activities, work under time constraints, handle sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism while maintaining confidentiality, and work both independently and collaboratively within groups is crucial. Familiarization with various regulatory requirements will be necessary to make appropriate assessments of proposed activities and in formulating applicable guidance for researchers to revise their protocol/amendment accordingly.
