The Department of Physiology and Biophysics is currently seeking a full time Research Associate 1. The Research Associate 1 supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.



JOB FUNCTIONS



Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.


  • Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.


  • Participates in the publication of significant results.


  • Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.


  • Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.


  • Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.


  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.


  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.


  • Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.


  • Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.


  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.





Department Specific Functions



Candidate should be a graduate with a BA/BS degree. S/he must have basic knowledge in cellular neurobiology and ideally, experience with functional imaging at the cellular level (e.g., Fura2, GCaMP imaging). Also important is candidate's experience/competence in small animal (rodent) surgery and familiarity with upper-level data analysis (Excel, ImageJ, MatLab, GraphPad Prism, etc.). The project will involve preparing mice for and conducting in vivo confocal Ca imaging. The successful candidate will be expected (in collaboration with and training by Dr. Roper) to conduct exp'ts; maintain a laboratory notebook; and analyze data using ImageJ, MatLab, Excel, and related software. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute actively to group discussions at weekly lab meetings and be cognizant of responsible conduct in research.
