The Manager of Research and Development for Engineered Nylons is responsible for managing the daily activity of R&D polymer associates and laboratory assets. Reporting to the Business Development Manager, this position will provide technical expertise in the development of new and existing specialty nylon chemistries. The Manager of Research and Development for Engineered Nylons role will interface with sales, supply chain, and manufacturing departments to provide tailor-made solutions within Shakespeare’s unique production capabilities and cover the full development process from the initial customer interaction, product design, and final product transition to manufacturing.
Essential Functions
Manage R&D lab & associates, including R&D resource allocation, maintaining lab equipment, developing & maintaining work instructions and operating within budget.
Develop new chemistries of Engineered Nylons and/or refinement of existing polymers through monomer selection and processing knowledge that aligned with Shakespeare’s unique production capabilities.
Overseeing and managing the safety of raw material ingredients, interactions, and process conditions during the entire development cycle.
Act as a technical consultant at the customer level to provide material solutions for present and future product needs.
Provide guidance, testing, and documentation for sales collateral, work instructions, regulatory filings, and Intellectual Property support.
Evaluation of new raw materials and alternate suppliers for new products and optimization of existing products
Participation in Operational Excellence team and assists with production process engineering.
Provide technical assistance to other areas within Shakespeare.
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or related field
Advanced degree, PhD or Masters, in related engineering field is preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering/technical field, preferably in condensation polymerization (Nylon or Polyester).and/or the nylon or polyester fiber industry
Minimum 2 years of experience in product development with successful track record of delivering new products to market.
Experienced in the use of experimental design as a development or process improvement tool.
High level of competency in statistical data analysis (statistical process control, analysis of process & product stability & capability)
Excellent communication and presentation skills. Proficient in the use of Microsoft’s Office Suite
Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams and departments.
