Job Description:

Heluna Health invites applications for a Certified Phlebotomist who will be working in the Center for Public Health Research (CPHR) at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. CPHR is a research unit that engages in a wide range of public health research including studies of populations at high risk for HIV infection. CPHR has developed methods and strategies for tracking the HIV Epidemic that have been used locally and around the globe since the 1980s. The CPHR Investigators are global leaders in the epidemiology of HIV infection, HIV research training methods, and informing HIV prevention approaches.


In this role, the Certified Phlebotomist supports an innovative project that will recruit, survey and conduct HIV testing with people who inject drugs (PWID) to better understand HIV prevalence and HIV risk behaviors in this population.


This position will be responsible for providing support for the day-to-day operations of the lab services operating under a CLIA waiver. The responsibilities include performing high-volume phlebotomy, management and processing of HIV and HCV specimens, supporting the project coordinator with data management of lab specimens, performing research-related lab duties, preparing samples for transport to an off-site lab, performing quality assurance on lab tests, and interpreting multiple HIV/HCV antibody tests. This position will also conduct HIV test counseling as needed in the clinic. Due to the nature of the study, work hours will include daytime, evening, and weekends. Successful candidates must be prepared to work late evening and weekend hours. Must have flexible availability to meet program needs. Must be experienced in conducting phlebotomy with people who inject drugs (PWID) communities.


This is a temporary (through Dec 31, 2024), grant-funded, part-time (25 hours), benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health. This is a hybrid position that requires some in person work.


Pay range: $35.00 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Study Activities
• Phlebotomy: Perform high-volume phlebotomy, particularly difficult venipunctures.
• Laboratory Technician: Perform quality assurance on lab tests, management and processing of specimens, preparing samples for transport to an off-site lab, ensure all tests are properly performed and documented per the clinic guidelines, and interpret multiple HIV/HCV antibody tests simultaneously as well as various other CLIA waived testing.
• Clinical Services: Serve as an HIV test counselor as needed.
• Clinical Research: Maintains regulatory compliance through proper documentation and implementation of research specimen testing, collection, processing, and shipping.
Other Responsibilities
• Contribute to other Center for Public Health Research projects, as needed
• Participate in meetings and quality control activities
• Perform other duties as required


JOB QUALIFICATIONS


Education/ Experience/ Certificates
• Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.


• Possession of California State Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II, Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certificate, or other degree that allows for performing venipunctures in the state of California. Employee must maintain an active phlebotomy certification with the California Laboratory Field Service.
• Current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Current California Certification as an HIV Counselor preferred.
• Training in Good Clinical Practices, research ethics, and IATA shipping preferred.
• Two plus years of phlebotomy experience in high-volume environments and difficult venipuncture populations
• At least one year of experience in an outpatient sexual health clinic is preferred.
• At least one year of experience in clinical research is preferred.
• Spanish speaking desired

• Knowledge: Possesses technical knowledge required to do the job. Experience working with people who inject drugs required. Knowledge of harm reduction principles and of San Francisco’s community-based organizations and service providers preferred.
