WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Illinois Nachusa Soil Technician will sample and process soil as part of a large collaborative research project. The technician will also assist with plant community surveys, wildlife tracking, data entry, and occasional stewardship activities as needed. All field sampling and processing at Nachusa Grasslands under the supervision and training of Dr. Elizabeth Bach.

Responsibilities & Scope:

  • May interact with visitors; will work with and interact with volunteer stewards.
  • Works under close or infrequent supervision.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

This is a full-time (average 37.5 hours per week), short-term position starting late May and ending mid-August (10 weeks total, exact start/end dates flexible). The position is located at Nachusa Grasslands Preserve near Dixon, IL and includes nice, clean on-site housing (one technician per room, high speed internet available at Headquarters, no pets).



WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

The Nature Conservancy in Illinois is seeking a Soil Technician to initiate a large collaborative research project at the Nachusa Grasslands Preserve. This 4,000 acre preserve, near Dixon, IL, is home to 180 species of birds, more than 700 native plant species, and a herd of bison! The Technician will learn soil sampling and processing skills, including soil aggregate isolation. Soil samples will be subjected to metagenomic and enzyme analysis downstream, and if interested, the Technician may gain knowledge of these procedures. The Technician will be part of a large collaborative scientific team, including researchers at San Diego State University. The project seeks to understand microbial community interactions as tallgrass prairie restorations establish and mature. Data will be used to enhance global models of soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous cycling. The Technician will also assist Dr. Elizabeth Bach with plant community surveys and wildlife tracking, supporting long-term research at Nachusa Grasslands. The position affords the opportunity to engage in interesting, educational, and challenging outside work at a dynamic restoration project. WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Course work in ecology or experience with natural areas restoration.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • Ability to work and live in a team environment.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay for a candidate selected for this position is generally $15.00 per hour (subject to required tax withholding). This rate only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
