Description Position Title: Graduate Assistant - Wilmer Writing Center
Supervisor's Title & Department: Jer Bryant, Assistant Professor (English) - Director, Alton L. Wilmer Writing Center
Session: Academic Year 24-25. This is a one-year placement with an opportunity for re-application and hire.
Hourly Rate & Leadership Classification: $17.00/hour
Average hours per week: 16 hours per week during fall and spring semesters; 9 hours per week during winter term and summer term or 20 hours a week during the academic year.
Job Purpose: The graduate assistant serves as the main liaison between the tutors and the director of Wilmer Writing Center. Moreover, the graduate assistant is responsible for conducting both in-person and online tutorials for undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students. The graduate assistant also assists in creating materials for the center and with assisting the director in supervision of the undergraduate tutors.

Essential Duties:
    Tutoring undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students in writing across all disciplinesConducting in-person and online tutoring (both synchronous and asynchronous) Assisting the director with creating content for and maintaining Wilmer Writing Center's Online Writing LabAssisting the director with creating resources for tutors and tuteesCreating and participating in writing center events, workshops, and promotional activitiesAssisting the director in managing undergraduate tutor staff

  • Qualifications Specific Skills:
      Strong writing skills, including mastery of grammar, organization in writing, using evidence, and at least one citation style;Ability to use style manuals and grammar manuals/handbooksStrong personal communication skills;Sympathetic attitude towards other students;Reliability for daily tasks;Thoughtful attitude towards the work of Wilmer Writing Center and to the GA's own professional development;Ability to revise and edit documents (for both content and grammar);Ability to work on the OWL (Online Writing Lab) in terms of creating documents, updating, revising, and editing;Ability to create resources for tutors and tuteesAbility to use software to schedule appointments, create client profiles, conduct online tutorials, and send client report forms;Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel; Working knowledge of Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Slides;Ability to assign tasks/appointments to undergraduate tutors

    Academics: A minimum 2.5 GPA
    Experience Requirements:Needs to have had at least one semester's successful experience as a tutor or prior teaching experience or other relevant experience
