Research Technician



The Williams Lab in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine/UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a Research Technician to assist in projects focused on breast cancer metastasis. The Research Technician will be expected to work under the direction of the Principal Investigator to conduct, analyze, and present data from experiments that address the laboratory mission of improving immunotherapy approaches for breast cancer metastasis, particularly to the liver. Training will be provided in established procedures with the possibility that these skills can be applied to the development of new protocols. The applicant should be able to learn quickly, complete tasks efficiently, and have the flexibility to perform multiple assays in one day. Initiative-taking applicants that are interested in learning new techniques, improving existing techniques, or assisting in the development of new techniques as an independent project are encouraged to apply.


Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions
  • Sterile culture and passaging of cells
  • Isolation of cells from human and mouse tissues
  • Variety of experimental assays: immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, western blot, and qRT-PCR
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and buffer solutions
  • Compiles, analyzes and presents data
  • Keeps detailed laboratory notebook
  • Optimizes cell co-culture systems
  • Assists with mouse experiments
  • Laboratory supply management
  • Written and verbal communication with vendors and Principal Investigator

Physical Effort

Light physical effort is required. Occasionally lifting of packages (~5-10 lbs).
