Job Description Summary

The Recreation Therapist will coordinate and facilitate recreation therapy programs that assist patients in recovering from or adjusting to disability. Provides recreational resources and opportunities in order to improve health and well-being. Also, confers with physician and interdisciplinary team in treatment planning.

Job Description



The Recreation Therapist:


  • Coordinate recreation/leisure therapy programs that assist with patient recovery/stability through conferring with physicians and treatment team members in establishing therapy goals.


  • Communicates with physician, clinical team members and patient/family, sharing information pertaining to the care for patient.


  • Assesses patient leisure interests and abilities and implements a well-balanced variety of innovative recreation programs.


  • Maintains current written documentation on patients receiving treatment services.


  • Plans, coordinates and facilitates community out-trip programs.


  • Conducts recreation therapy-related education programs for staff, students and volunteers.


  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.




Reporting Relationships


  • Reports directly to the Manager, Therapeutic Recreation




Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required


  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field from an accredited College or University


  • Completion of a clinical Internship


  • Have to be NCTRC certified or eligible for certification within 6 months of date of hire.


  • CPR certification.


  • Knowledge of physical rehabilitation and/or a various diagnoses of all ages.


  • Ability to plan and coordinate activities for a variety of disabilities and ages


  • Ability to perform activity analysis/modification for specific leisure skills and equipment modification for execution of treatment services.


  • Able to communicate with health care professionals, establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and motivate patients and provide direction to volunteers.


  • Valid driver's license in State of Illinois is necessary.


  • Able to maintain professional expertise through reading appropriate professional literature, attending meetings, workshops, conferences and in-service education programs.




Working Conditions


  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.


  • Occasional exposure to infectious and contagious diseases when working with patients.


  • May include exposure to community settings.


  • Evening and weekend availability required.
