Job Description:

Schedule: fulltime days, 8am-4:30pm



Under the supervision of the Nursing Director and as a member of the Department Based Patient Care Team, the Operating Room department secretary performs a wide range of secretarial duties and coordinates department appointment admissions and throughput to ensure professional and efficient operation of the department in providing quality patient care.


  • The department secretary is responsible for all aspects of patient scheduling in accordance with complex department scheduling guidelines to facilitate effective and efficient utilization of the operating room. This position supports patient flow in relation to the schedule and effectively facilitates communication by keeping staff, physicians, and various ancillary services informed of the progress of the schedule, any actual or potential delays, or operational issues within the department.

  • Under the direction of the operating room Charge Nurse, manages and enters emergent and urgent add on cases into EPIC scheduling.

  • The department secretary must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide indirect care appropriate to the population of patients served in the department.

Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree preferred.

  • 1-2 years of experience in medical, customer service setting preferred, but not required.

  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred

  • Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office & Epic strongly preferred.

  • Staff adheres to all C.A.R.E. Standards

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel.

  • The ability to work as a team member, promoting a caring and collegial attitude toward fellow employees.

  • The ability to work under stressful conditions, adapting to the changing pace on the unit, frequent interruptions, emergencies, and acutely ill patients.

  • Ability to work independently, with well developed organizational skills in order to prioritize tasks.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with staff through voice mail, e-mail, etc.

  • Demonstration of flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse role as a member of the unit - based patient care team.

  • Ability to assist with the transportation of patients as indicated.
