Position Summary
The Senior Coordinator, Outreach will develop and implement environmental, public, and volunteer programs conducted by Audubon Great Plains, serving North and South Dakota. The Senior Coordinator of Outreach will plan community programs and events for families and adult participants, including community science projects, both at the National Audubon Society Edward M. Brigham III Alkali Lake Wildlife Sanctuary and in North and South Dakota.

The Senior Coordinator, Outreach will serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers, lead volunteer recruitment and communication, as well as plan and lead volunteer workdays, trainings, and related activities. The Senior Coordinator, Outreach will report directly to the Communications Manager.
Compensation:
$43,000 – $50,000 / year
Essential Functions
  • Develop a coordinated, regional volunteer program that efficiently connects interested volunteers with appropriate opportunities within the Audubon Great Plains (e.g., attending weekend restoration events, participating in grassland bird surveys, etc.), recruit additional volunteer support where needed through outreach to local and area businesses/schools, and ensure that volunteers are properly trained, onboarded, and retained.

  • Responsible for setting the event schedule, running the events (including volunteer recruitment/coordination), and event follow up. For restoration events, the Senior Coordinator, Outreach will collaborate with the Audubon Great Plains team to identify restoration priorities, actions, and methodologies.

  • Develop and maintain a volunteer database that can be used for recruitment and outreach.

  • Responsible for establishing new relationships and maintaining existing relationships with community groups, supporters, partners, potential program presenters to develop programing with them to further Audubon’s mission.

  • Lead offsite speaking engagements at local organizations, tabling at community events, and attend relevant community meetings to engage groups in Audubon’s initiatives.

  • Organize and host outreach events in coordination with Audubon Great Plains staff (workshops, field trips, talks, etc.), communicating the importance of Audubon strategies.

  • Coordinate approximately three programs and outreach events (including volunteer events) a month related to grant deliverables and objectives, bringing awareness to conservation strategies to various audiences.

  • Develop and deliver summer programming at the Edward M. Brigham II Sanctuary in Spiritwood, ND for K-8 students.

  • Build relationships with diverse audiences through various actions, including but not limited to inviting them to partner in creating off site programs, and events and delivering offsite programs for them.

  • Maintain records and budgets related to program and volunteer management and report on metrics, as requested.

  • Maintain inventory, condition, and organization of educational materials, supplies, and equipment.

  • Generate social media and website content, specifically education related posts, videos, and blog content.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science, communications, or related field required. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

  • Three plus years of experience in community outreach preferably in a school, nature/science center, zoo, aquarium, museum, or community-based organization.

  • Proven experience in outreach, and working with other organizations, teachers & naturalists, in both formal and informal settings.

  • Experience leading and teaching groups of students.

  • General knowledge of the natural history and birds of the region

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Capacity to work easily and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, build relationships, be diplomatic, and exhibit sensitivity to, and understanding of the dynamics of a complex organizations.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and increasing access to conservation and the outdoors for historically excluded populations.

  • Ability to adapt and use resources efficiently and creatively, as well as take initiative and manage time with competing priorities.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as needed.

  • An engaging and energetic demeanor and the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, and potential partners will be fundamental to success.

  • A passion for conservation of the natural resources of the Great Plains.

  • Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and be able to multi-task.

  • Experience working with nonprofit, volunteer-based organizations preferred.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software essential.
