(Contingent upon available funding): 21.25 - 28.00, Hourly Work Schedule: M - F, 8 - 5; occasional overtime to support OSU events Faculty Appt Period: Job Summary: Conducts fire and life safety building reviews for academic buildings, dormitories, research laboratories/facilities, construction and renovation projects. Reviews new and remodel construction plans and submittals by campus entities or outside contractors for code compliance. Inspects renovation projects of campus facilities for adherence to scope of work under which Construction Permit was issued and reports compliance concerns to University Fire Marshal. Assists with construction plan reviews. Acts as the point of contact for event planning activities for campus.


Regular exposure to physically demanding and hazardous tasks including walking for long periods of time, bending, stooping, lifting, standing, reaching and climbing stairs/ladders. Must pass post-offer physical exam and be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment. Must be able to lift in excess of 30 pounds. Position may have occasional exposure to unsafe/hazardous environments and/or materials, and extreme temperatures.


Exceptional working conditions range from clean to dirty atmospheres under all types of conditions and weather. 


Due to communication expectations of this position, the employee will be required to carry a department-issued cell phone while performing assigned duties. Position will require travel to campus locations including other OSU Campuses and A&Ms.


Employee is expected to work a reasonable amount of overtime serving as a first-aid responder at University-sponsored events.

Required Qualifications:



High School/GED


Six years experience in general fire and safety protection or related field. Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology or a related field may be substituted for years of experience.  


Valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned. CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification within 6 months of hire. Fire Service Training Inspection Certification required within 6 months of hire.

Ability to communicate well (verbally and written) with good report writing skills. Must be detailed oriented and able to interact well and work with people.  Knowledge of NFPA Code, International Building & Fire Codes (IBC/IFC), and all state adopted building codes. Experience conducting fire alarm, fire sprinkler and fire/life safety plan reviews. Computer skills to include operation and utilization of various software programs to include MS office. Respirator fit test & pre-employment physical.


Preferred Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Technology or related field


At least five years experience in general fire and safety protection or related field. 


CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification 
Fire Service Training Inspection Certification 
Fire Inspector II certification within 6 months of hire
