The Onco-Genomics Shared Resource (OGSR) at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center provides technical services for the study of the genomics and epigenetics of cancer. The shared resource focuses on providing a broad range of next generation sequencing (NGS) services in addition to single cell studies, gene expression assays and nucleic acid sample prep. Technical platforms in the OGSR include equipment from: Illumina, 10X Genomics, Mission Bio, nanoString, and PerkinElmer.


This individual will join a team of 5 research staff collectively responsible for providing genomics services for Sylvester Research Programs. They will report to Siôn Williams PhD, Director of the OGSR.



Job Functions:



  • Developing proficiency with the lab techniques routinely employed in the OCF such as RNA and DNA extraction, NGS library prep and sequencing, gene expression assays, qPCR and ddPCR.


  • Perform complex and routine molecular biology and other laboratory procedures as instructed.


  • Develop, adapt and implement new lab procedures with supervision.


  • Contribute to creation and implementation of SOPs and protocols for the OGSR.


  • Record and report data accurately and in a timely manner.


  • Communicate clearly and professionally with OGSR customers and other University of Miami staff.


  • Manage the organization of instruments, supplies, service contracts, requisition forms, financial documents and service schedules. Assist with billing and collecting for services, constructing and maintaining facility budgets and ordering supplies. Keep abreast of latest developments in the field and be able to search literature databases and technical resources for solutions to problems. Perform other duties as assigned.





Qualifications:




Education:



Bachelor's Degree in relevant scientific field required



Experience:



  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience working with any of the following:


  • Core Facility providing genomics or molecular biology services NGS library prep Molecular Biology wet lab


  • Experience in non-standard library prep such as: single cell, low input workflows, IP-based workflows or transposon workflows is highly desirable.





Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:



  • Excellent communication skills in English


  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to record work in a service laboratory environment in an organized manner.


  • Ability to work well in a team and understand performance goals.


  • Experience working with gene expression assays or next generation sequencing is highly desirable. Technical experience with Illumina, NanoString, 10x Genomics, Agilent or Perkin Elmer technical platforms is beneficial.


  • Relevant experience in molecular biology laboratory techniques and/or working in a core facility environment is advantageous.
