Your impact:

House Beautiful is seeking an energized and process-obsessed temporary deputy managing editor from approximately July 2024 to November 2024. This individual will oversee content operations for the brand by supporting the editorial, art, photo, and video teams in managing their day-to-day workflows. Areas of expertise will range from basic office admin (deliveries, printing, light tech, invoices, etc.) to high-level production such as shipping the print magazine. Our dream candidate is super-organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and kind; loves a deadline; and knows how to balance the priorities of managing the production of a website and a print publication. This is a full time position and must be able to commute to Hearst’s New York office Mondays and Tuesdays.

Please note: For consideration, resumes must be submitted in PDF format with a cover letter, salary requirements, and a link to a portfolio or samples of work.

What you'll do:

  • Oversee every aspect of the brand's content production, including digital, print, video, social, podcasts, books, and more

  • Maintain, update, and enforce website and print production schedules, tracking both day-to-day assignments and larger projects, to ensure all deadlines are met

  • Work closely with all staff to ensure workloads are both balanced and effective in meeting larger team goals

  • Hire, book, and manage assignments for freelance copy editors

  • Route print pages through layout approval to final proof stage, cross-reference changes, and release pages to our printing partner, working closely with them to deliver clean files on time

  • Onboard and manage freelancers, including temporary workers, writers, illustrators, and copy editors

  • Process and track payment of invoices; manage larger brand expenses

Who you are:

  • You love solving problems and working with many different personalities and management styles

  • You are an obsessively organized project manager who can multitask among competing priorities

  • You have a roll-up-your-sleeves, get-the-job-done-right mentality, no matter the task

  • You have at previous magazine production experience, preferably cross-platform

  • You have experience with InCopy, InDesign, and Woodwing. Ideally Asana and Slack as well (or at least a willingness to learn!).

The paid hourly rate for this role is $65/hour. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
