Systems Administrator



The systems engineer position is responsible for provisioning and maintaining systems and associated infrastructure within the School of Computing and Information. The professional in this role will collaborate with researchers, faculty, and staff to install, configure, and manage IT-related hardware, software packages, libraries, databases, and applications on servers and workstations in a multiplatform environment consisting of Linux and Windows servers/desktops and Macintosh desktops. In addition, the Systems Engineer will maintain classroom and shared spaces technology, make/restore data backups, maintain equipment inventory, apply security patches, work with Pitt IT and certification authorities to register devices and services, and place equipment purchase orders.


Job Summary

Installs, configures, and maintains systems and associated infrastructure at the enterprise level. Assists in designing architecture and planning deployment of complex servers and associated infrastructure. Evaluates and recommends effective tools for system and infrastructure maintenance and support. Architects and evaluates system enhancements to be implemented and serves as escalation and a top-tier point of contact for complex installation and upgrades.


Essential Functions

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a Bachelor's degree in the field of computer or information sciences and demonstrate a track record as a systems administrator. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide evidence of expertise in the following areas:

- Unix Systems Administration including OS installation, management and setup, automation. User management, scripts, software installation, and hardware configuration change tasks (RHEL and Debian based distributions).

- Python and nVidia CUDA modules setup and configuration.

- Relational database management administration experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle) including installation, configuration, and maintenance tasks.

- Managing Unix security updates, Unix package management tools, systems patching, and migration techniques.

-Good programming practices and well-organized software development habits. Familiarity with MVC model web programming, Perl, Windows administration, and OpenAFS are a plus.


Physical Effort

Must be able to move computer monitors that may weigh as much as 85 pounds.
