The Role




The SSN(X) Fluid Systems Team is looking for an Engineer Design 3 to join their team in order to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine. This is an opportunity to get in at the beginning of a new design and have influence over what will become the Navy's premier attack submarine platform. Lead teams in pursuit of future state visions, development and standardization of design practices, development of design tool functionality, and training of the workforce. Is held directly responsible for working complex technical problems and providing solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious. Serves as organization leader on aspects of advanced projects and/or programs. Acts as advisor to management and customers on system designs and project development. Possesses skills for organizing, overseeing and leading projects and teams for solving emergent issues across the organization. Assignments are often self-initiated and course of actions and desired results are understood and managed by this candidate.


Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.




Must Have




Bachelor of Science Degree and 5 years of related experience;
4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree;
12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree.




Nice to Have




• Knowledge of submarine machinery and how it interfaces with the structural, electrical, and fluid piping systems.
• Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
• Excellent communication, both written and verbal.
• Experience working with NAVSEA, Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and or General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB) is desired.
• Demonstrated abilities organizing, leading, and presenting complex/advanced projects to leadership at NNS, and external parties including EB and NAVSEA.
• Working knowledge in Process development /process mapping.
• Experience/Knowledge in construction deliverables or processes.
• Operational experience on commissioned Navy vessels is a plus.
