Civil Engineer-in-Training

Urban Engineers, Inc. is proud to offer an 18-24-month Civil Engineer-in-Training Program which provides motivated candidates with the opportunity to experience multiple civil engineering disciplines. During the course of this exciting training program, participants will rotate between disciplines within Civil Engineering such as, but not limited to: Construction, Highway, Geotechnical, Structural, Municipal, and Land Development. Throughout the program, Civil Engineers-in-Training will report to a single point of contact who will help guide them throughout. At the end of the rotational program, candidates will have gained well-rounded and hands-on knowledge of Civil Engineering, and greater insight into which disciplines they wish to pursue long-term.

The rotational program includes:


  • Rotation 1: ≈ 6 months - Construction, part 1
  • Rotation 2: ≈ 2 months - Geotechnical
  • Rotation 3: ≈ 2 months - Highway & Municipal
  • Rotation 4: ≈ 2 months - Land Development
  • Rotation 5: ≈ 7 months - Construction, part 2
  • Rotation 6: ≈ 2 months - Structural
  • Final Career development discussion

Position Responsibilities:

Construction Phase


  • Perform field and lab concrete and soils testing for construction projects.
  • Perform inspection of contract items for conformance with plans and specifications, and field measure pay quantities.
  • Prepare pay estimates and work orders.
  • Generate and maintain over/under cost records.
  • Generate and maintain submittal and RFI logs.
  • Attend project meetings, assist in documenting meeting minutes.
  • Recommend approval of contractor submittals.

Design Phase

  • Perform engineering design tasks for various project types.
  • Perform engineering analysis using various design software packages.
  • Prepare design calculations.
  • Prepare preliminary engineering reports.
  • Prepare construction plans, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Perform field inspections to assess existing conditions.
  • Work within design teams to deliver quality work while maintaining established budgets schedules.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is required.
  • Prior internship experience is preferred.
  • ACI Certification is preferred for Construction (reimbursable by Urban).
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • A valid US driver's license in good standing is required.
  • Ability and willingness to work throughout western PA (may require relocation).
