Electrical Hardware Development Engineer

Salt Lake City, Utah (Onsite)

Position Summary

Thales is looking for an Electrical Hardware Development Engineer to join our NAS (Navigation And non-radar Surveillance) business located onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Thales’ Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by over two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN & VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 10,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 180 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market.

In this position, you are responsible for designing and developing schematics, circuits, and hardware for circuit boards with an emphasis in Analog & Digital circuitry.  The engineer will perform circuit analysis; develop prototypes, setup and run simulations and create models for Thales’ NAVAIDs. You will report directly to the Salt Lake City Engineering Manager of Thales’ NAS business segment.

Key Areas of Responsibility


  • Experience in taking an idea from a concept through requirement generation, design & development, and all the way to manufacturing.

  • Creating component level schematics, design, and providing oversight of the development of printed wiring boards (PWBs). Reviewing designs generated by other engineers and leading Critical Design Reviews (CDRs).

  • Reviewing previous circuit designs and updating them for obsolescence as required. Having the ability to read specifications documents.

  • Designing component level circuity utilizing op-amps, transistors, ADC’s, DAC’s filters and other complex ICs. Designing next generation Navigation & Surveillance Electronic systems at the schematic & PCB/PWB level for Analog, Digital and RF circuits.

  • Performing systems and subsystem hardware and hardware/software integration and test. Having the ability to Test and Debug PCB analog, digital and RF circuits using test equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analysis, spectrum analyzer, etc. 

  • Performing mentoring, and being mentored by, other engineers & technicians to advance overall skill levels. Performing scheduling and tracking of a project’s progress.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Must be a US Person as defined in applicable law.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, or other technical field and 5+ years’ experience in the development/design of highly reliable analog electronics.

  • Proven ability to perform creative synthesis/analysis. Proficient in quickly learning and executing advanced design and/or analysis techniques.

  • Knowledgeable with closed loop control systems, electronic hardware design.

  • Experience with design, testing and verification/validation of analog hardware.

  • Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong analytical abilities.

Special Position Requirements


  • Schedule: Mon – Thu on 9/80 or 5/40 schedule in a hybrid work environment.

  • Physical Environment: SLC, UT

  • Travel: Anticipated to be less than 10% annually. Trips can both be domestic and international travel and less than 5 days in length, with international tips up to 7 days in length.
