The Opportunity

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM) at Temple University invites applications and nominations for Senior Associate Dean for Education (SADE). The SADE reports to the Dean of LKSOM and is responsible for the oversight of LKSOM student education programs, including undergraduate medical education (UME); graduate student education programs (MS, Ph.D., MD/Ph.D., MA, MS-Physician Assistant), and post-baccalaureate programs. The Undergraduate Medical Education Associate Dean, Student Support Associate Dean, and Graduate Studies Associate Dean report directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Education and collaborate to create academic excellence, professionalism, diversity, inclusion, and teamwork that fosters student and faculty success. The Senior Associate Dean for Education provides the vision for the LKSOM educational strategic plan and works directly with the Associate Vice Dean for Strategic Initiatives to execute planning activities. Preference will be given to educational leaders who have demonstrated by earlier accomplishments an ability to define a vision that maximizes Temple's education mission. This unique role will allow the successful candidate to continue the rich history and mission of LKSOM while educating students for the future of medicine. Specific Responsibilities

The Senior Associate Dean will:


  • Report directly to the Dean of LKSOM and serve on the Dean's Leadership Committee.

  • Oversee all educational and administrative aspects of the MD, Graduate, Physician Assistant, and Post-baccalaureate programs, including resource management.

  • Lead the strategic and operational efforts for LKSOM to create viable graduate-level programs consistent with the School's and University's mission.

  • Collaboratively develop and implement strategic plans for education programs in alignment with LKSOM's strategic plan and goals.


  • Provide structure, processes, and policies to support all students' success in their respective curricula.

  • Work with the Senior Associate Dean of the LKSOM regional campus and other clinical affiliate Deans to ensure consistent and equitable educational experiences for all students.


  • Support and mentor the career development of the Assistant and Associate Deans who are direct reports.

  • Ensure the undergraduate medical curriculum aligns with the School of Medicine's strategic objectives; participate in the curriculum evaluation via collaboration with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education and Curriculum Committee.

  • Ensure that the Student Handbook and all education-related policies are reviewed and updated annually.

  • Meet at least monthly with student leadership to address student concerns and update students on issues such as building safety, mistreatment, changes to the curriculum, and policy changes in full alignment with the Associate Dean for Student Support and program staff.


  • Work collaboratively to ensure that all programs meet their respective accreditation standards; ensure that processes are in place for collecting and evaluating data to verify that each student receives a quality education.


  • Foster an environment of diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students in all activities.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs to align programs in the Kozera Teaching Academy and elsewhere to support faculty development.

  • Recommend candidates to the Dean for faculty administrative positions related to the education program, including associate dean and director positions.

  • Partner with Finance to authorize significant changes in administrative procedures, faculty FTE, and systems.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director for Education on multiple facets of education in all degree programs.

  • Ensure that the education- and student-related components of the LKSOM bylaws and all LKSOM policies and procedures are accurate and enforced.

  • Approve budgets submitted by underlying units to LKSOM finance and any large expenditures during the fiscal year.

  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the Student Academic Standards and Promotions Committee and the MD Admissions Committee.

  • Participate in the search for key administrative positions.

  • Analyze and implement national best practices in all facets of education at LKSOM.

  • Oversee and implement LKSOM's strategic plan for education.

  • Advocate for education with stakeholders and leadership at the highest levels of administration.

  • Proven ability to develop and execute short- and long-term strategic initiatives.

  • Uphold School values of teamwork, optimism, communication, and excellence.

  • Outstanding leadership, interpersonal communication, collaboration, team building, and negotiation skills with various constituencies (students, faculty, chairs, staff) are essential.

  • Ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, gender identity, and socioeconomic backgrounds and adapt a flexible leadership style for multiple cultural environments with a strong knowledge of racial health disparities.

  • Established record of effective and collaborative senior leadership in a medical school or similar academic institution

  • History of promoting a shared vision and mission across a large complex organization and amongst external stakeholders and constituents

  • Significant academic credentials with a distinguished track record of success in education administration

  • In-depth knowledge of accreditation standards and processes, ideally leading an institution through a successful LCME and/or another accreditation.



Educational Requirements and Minimum Qualifications


  • This position requires a doctoral degree, including a PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent, and a distinguished record of leadership in medical education.

  • Candidates must have demonstrated the expertise appropriate to attain the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

  • A minimum of ten years of experience is preferred in undergraduate and graduate medical education.

  • The successful applicant should have a record of excellence in education, including first-hand experience developing and implementing preclinical and clinical medical education curricula.

  • Candidates must have strong administrative and leadership skills and a commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.

  • Candidates should have demonstrated the ability to lead a diverse group of faculty and staff members and be able to clearly articulate her/his vision for innovation in medical education.

  • The level of faculty appointment will be commensurate with the experience and academic achievement of the selected candidate.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and group presentation skills.



Faculty Appointment, Benefits/Compensation

The Senior Associate Dean for Education will carry a faculty appointment at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University; the level of faculty appointment will be commensurate with the experience and academic achievement of the selected candidate. The annual compensation shall be determined based on experience and qualifications.
