Overview
The AOD Clinician and Prevention Specialist is a new role within University Health Services, providing expertise across the intersections of well-being, mental health and alcohol and substance use.
The individual in this position would be situated across the UHS departments of Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS,) Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS), and Medical Services, reporting directly to the Associate Director of CPS, with a dotted reporting line to the Associate Director of HPPS. The AOD Clinician and Prevention Specialist will act as the primary provider and administrative lead of BASICS (Originally Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students; at Princeton, BASICS is Balancing Alcohol and/or Substance use to Improve Campus Success). BASICS utilizes motivational interviewing to assist students in reducing the harmful effects of their alcohol and/or cannabis use. The AOD Clinician and Prevention Specialist will provide direct clinical services to our undergraduate and graduate student population and contribute to AOD harm reduction efforts out of HPPS.
The AOD Clinician and Prevention Specialist will serve as a liaison between CPS, Medical Services and HPPS on AOD harm reduction and treatment. As part of that liaison role, the person in this position will work with Medical Services in their efforts to screen and refer students with alcohol and/or substance use issues that present in the primary care or medical urgent care setting. Also, this clinician will be the main contact for follow-up between staff across these areas around students identified as having concerning patterns of substance use.

Responsibilities
Provision of BASICS
Utilizes motivational interviewing strategies to provide BASICS (Balancing Alcohol and/or Substance use to Improve Campus Success, at Princeton) educational intervention sessions to referred students
Maintains patient confidentiality regarding highly sensitive health issues, throughout the BASICS process
Utilizes sound clinical judgement to make appropriate referrals of BASICS patients to Medical Services, the SHARE office, and/or other CPS providers
Utilizes software systems, including Medicat, PeopleSoft, a BASICS Feedback Survey tool, and Microsoft Outlook and Excel, to manage referrals to and from BASICS as well as scheduling and the online assessment students complete as part of BASICSCollaborates closely with colleagues across University Health Services and from across campus, including the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students and Graduate Student Affairs, to receive referrals and educate campus partners about BASICS
Maintain a relationship with the vendor that provides the feedback survey and reports utilized in BASICS
Provision of clinical services
Provides time-limited individual and group psychotherapeutic treatment, psychological evaluations, and urgent care and crisis intervention, for students experiencing challenges related to AOD use
Serves on an on-call after hours rotation with other CPS staff
Performs specialized evaluations for students of concern: these include administrative, readmission, exit, and post-hospital evaluations
Uses clinical data to inform diagnostic assessments (DSM-V) and treatment planning
Runs CPS therapy groups specific to AOD-related concerns
Leads CPS AOD team and compiles corresponding reports
Prevention and outreach
Works with HPPS to engage in evidence-informed campus outreach and community education with a particular focus on AOD harm reduction
Assists HPPS in the development and coordination of AOD related programming, education, and communications campaigns (e.g., on UMatter through Limits Matter)
Collaborates with HPPS on assessing and evaluating programs and services, as well as researching and analyzing substance use trends on campus
Develops relationships with relevant community partners (e.g., Catholic Charities), including local substance abuse treatment centers, intensive outpatient programs, and residential programs
In consultation with HPPS, serves as liaison/adviser to student groups supporting peers at the intersections of well-being and AOD-related topics (e.g., Recovery@ Princeton)
Actively participates in UHS and University partnerships/committees/task force
Serves as a liaison between CPS, Medical Services and HPPS on AOD harm reduction and treatment and provides trainings of UHS staff on harm reduction
Assists Medical Services in the development and coordination of an AOD related screening program
Serves as main contact for follow-up between staff across these areas around students identified as having concerning patterns of substance use
Qualifications
Master’s degree in social work, LPC, or doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA)-approved doctoral program
3+ years experience
Completion of APA-approved clinical internship or equivalent
New Jersey State licensure or license-eligible
Advanced understanding of the full range of developmental and mental health challenges affecting late adolescents and young adults and the intersection of this development with AOD harm reduction and treatment
Demonstrated excellence in developing, facilitating, and evaluating evidence-informed prevention and outreach programming on alcohol and other drug harm reduction
Demonstrated excellence in creating solid collaborative relationships with community stakeholders and partners
Evidence of the provision of culturally informed mental health care, and attunement to the manifestations of psychological problems across different cultural backgrounds, identity configurations, and genders
Specialized knowledge and expertise in clinical modalities for the full spectrum of alcohol and other drug use, including BASICS and/or motivational interviewing.
Knowledge of New Jersey's psychology licensure standards and federal regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA) pertaining to health care organizations (including clinical records, patient privacy and confidentiality, treatment of minors) as well as relevant accreditation standards (e.g., Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care)
Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
