Position Summary

As a Senior Scientist - Oligonucleotide Chemistry, you will play a critical role as part of an expanding, multi-disciplinary team to help generate novel chemistries, technologies and materials to support Illumina's diverse research portfolio. The successful candidate will be relied upon as a wealth of knowledge in the nucleic acid and oligonucleotide technology space to help guide, service and develop internal research projects and platforms.

Daily activities will involve the design, synthesis and characterization of complex oligonucleotides utilizing a high-throughput workflow. The successful candidate will be expected to bring their critical thinking and strategic decision-making skills to this role to help address research gaps, refine outcomes and become a key program stakeholder, all while advancing the next generation of Illumina's nucleic acid/oligonucleotide and material development platforms.

Responsibilities:


  • Synthesize, purify and analyze complex oligonucleotide molecules.

  • Propose alternative oligonucleotide designs and modification strategies to satisfy program needs.

  • Have a solid understanding of the current and growing repertoire of nucleic acid/oligonucleotide modifications.

  • Help the team execute on its deliverables in a timely fashion while representing its capabilities across departments.

  • Conduct meetings and present findings to the team, leadership and to key program stakeholders.

  • Consult relevant scientific literature and utilize data-driven approaches to propose solutions, next steps and/or alternative avenues.

  • Contribute to and take ownership of both ongoing and new internal research projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Become the point-of-contact for the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation.

  • Propose and implement automated workflows for oligo generation, purification and analysis.

  • Ha ve a solid stake in the future expansion of our team, its capabilities and capacities.

Requirements:


  • Proven track record of success in synthetic organic chemistry, nucleic acid/sugar/oligonucleotide chemistry and/or bioconjugation chemistry with relevant experience and/or publications.

  • Hands-on experience with oligonucleotide synthesis on at least one platform (Mermade, Dr. Oligo, Oligopilot, etc).

  • Experience with analytical techniques such as NMR, PAGE, HPLC, LCMS, RP & IEX.

  • Experience with oligonucleotide purification (PAGE and/or column chromatography).

  • Excellent laboratory (GLP), experimental and organizational skills.

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Proven team-player with a positive and approachable attitude.

  • Natural attention to detail and the ability to clearly communicate results and ideas to a variety of audiences and skill levels.

  • Critical thinker, results-driven, analytical, organized, efficient, problem solver, adaptive and self-motivated.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience:


  • Advanced knowledge in nucleic acid and oligonucleotide chemistry.

  • Experience with multiple oligonucleotide synthesis platforms (Mermade, Dr. Oligo, Oligopilot, Expedite, ABI, etc.).

  • Advanced knowledge in various nucleic acid and oligonucleotide purification techniques, instrumentation and method development.

  • Experience with mRNA and/or peptides a plus.

  • Experience with advanced analytical techniques (CD, CE, UV-Tm, SEC, HIC) and method development.

  • Experience working in teams in an industrial setting is highly desired.

Ed ucation :


  • BSc with 5+ years; MSc with 3+ years; PhD with 0 - 3 years.

  • Postdoctoral experience a plus.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Scientist - Oligonucleotide Chemistry role based in the United States of America is: $88,200 - $132,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
